With Higher Taxes Looming, Bonuses May Come Early - NYTimes ...

Some highly paid workers may be getting an extra Christmas present this year: an early bonus.

Firms in bonus-heavy industries like finance, law and consulting typically pay their annual bonuses after Jan. 1, once the firm?s (and employee?s) previous calendar-year performance can be fully assessed. But now, anticipating higher income tax rates in 2013, some companies have decided to distribute their bonuses by Dec. 31 instead.

At Ares Management, a financial services firm, employees have been told they will receive bonuses in mid-December instead of mid-January. A spokesman for the company declined to comment about its compensation practices.

Paying bonuses early ? not more, not less, just early ? can save high-income employees quite a bit of cash. That is because a series of tax changes scheduled to kick in at the end of the year will cause income received in 2013 to be taxed at higher rates than income received in 2012.

?It?s one of the few things you can do as an employer that?ll make employees happy that doesn?t cost you anything,? said Alan Johnson, managing director of Johnson Associates, a compensation consulting firm.

Mr. Johnson, like other compensation and tax consultants and lawyers interviewed, said he had been receiving a lot of inquiries from firms considering accelerating their bonuses into this year.

?Right after the election, many of our clients started calling saying they were interested in doing this,? said Regina Olshan, a partner in the executive compensation group at the international law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. So far only a handful have actually decided to give bonuses early, she said, but others may follow suit if Congress marches toward Dec. 31 without voting to undo planned tax increases.

?I can promise you I?ll have calls on Dec. 20 asking, ?Can I accelerate everything in the next two weeks??? she said.

Smaller, privately held firms ? particularly private equity companies, known for their tax-planning acumen ? seem to be taking the biggest interest.

Publicly held companies often have a bigger administrative and legal burden if they change their bonus calendar, especially since many of them have employees abroad under different countries? tax systems. Public companies also appear to be wary of the appearance of lowering their tax bill, even if the actions are completely legal, particularly if they received taxpayer-funded bailouts during the financial crisis.

?There?s so much contemplated regulation in terms of compensation these days,? said Steven G. Eckhaus, a partner at the law firm Katten Muchin Rosenman. ?You can just imagine the public reaction given the fact that bankers are still doing relatively well relative to everyone else. Most people don?t have the luxury of being able to change when they get their compensation, let alone receive that kind of bonus in the first place.?

One of the risks of paying bonuses early is that companies do not know for certain whether they will hit their annual targets, which for accounting, legal and administrative reasons are often supposed to be tied to the bonuses they pay out.

After all, in the last few weeks of the year, clients may not pay, the market may drop precipitously, or some other calamity may arise, and companies have no easy way of clawing back bonuses they have already given out.

At publicly traded companies, if performance-based bonuses are distributed and the company does not hit its targets, the company itself can face adverse tax consequences.

One solution, said Mr. Johnson, is to pay part of the annual bonus before Dec. 31, and then wait to pay the rest of it until after the new year, when the company has had a chance to go over the complete books more thoroughly.

Paying bonuses early can certainly impose administrative headaches.

Even though, for accounting reasons, companies usually know by December roughly how much money they?re going to pay out over all, they usually have not yet determined how that bonus pool will be distributed. At bigger firms, the process for allocating bonuses takes about six weeks, according to James F. Reda, managing director at James F. Reda & Associates, a division of Gallagher Benefit Services.

Usually, accountants and tax lawyers advise their clients to defer as much compensation as possible until after the new year.

That?s partly because there is a chance that their income will fall into a lower tax bracket the following year. Additionally, receiving income on Jan. 1 rather than Dec. 31 also means that they can hold on to their money longer before having to hand over some of it as taxes to the government. Income received on Dec. 31, 2012, is taxed by April 15, 2013; taxes on money received on Jan. 1, 2013, may not be payable in full until April 15, 2014. The taxpayer can use that extra year to invest the money and earn a return on it.

Accountants? and lawyers? advice is different this year because tax rates are expected to rise on Jan. 1, particularly for those with higher incomes.

If tax rates for high earners return to their Clinton-era rates, as President Obama wants, the top marginal income tax rate would rise from 35 percent to 39.6 percent. That may not sound like a big jump, but when you?re talking about large sums of money, the increase can be substantial.

A $1 million bonus taxed at the top marginal rate, for example, would incur an additional $46,000 in taxes ($396,000, instead of $350,000).

And that calculation factors in just one of the tax rates scheduled to rise at the end of the year. Earners in the top brackets are likely be hit with other tax increases in 2013, including the expiration of the payroll tax cut and a new Medicare surtax created by the Affordable Care Act.

Clients have been calling their tax and compensation lawyers about accelerating other forms of income, too. Ms. Olshan said she received a call from a client who expected to be fired next year and wanted to know about requesting severance early.

Compensation lawyers and consultants noted that companies have received ?false alarms? about Washington?s plans to raise taxes in the past, so companies may be dragging their feet about speeding up the bonus cycle this year.

?This is about the fourth time we?ve gone through this tax scare, where people say there?s some catastrophic tax thing coming,? Mr. Johnson said. As a result, he thinks most firms will not revise their bonus calendars. ?Some may regret it deeply in a few months, but I think most won?t get around to it.?

Archaeologists discover shipwrecks, ancient harbor on coast of Israel

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? Arrchaeologists from the University of Rhode Island, the Israel Antiquities Authority, and the University of Louisville have discovered the remains of a fleet of early-19th century ships and ancient harbor structures from the Hellenistic period (third to first century B.C.) at the city of Akko, one of the major ancient ports of the eastern Mediterranean. The findings shed light on a period of history that is little known and point to how and where additional remains may be found.

The discoveries were presented on November 15 and 17 in Chicago at the annual meeting of the American Schools of Oriental Research by URI assistant professors Bridget Buxton and William Krieger on behalf of the Israel Coast Exploration project.

According to Buxton, three of the four well-preserved shipwrecks found off the coast south of Akko were first detected using a sub-bottom profiler in 2011. Later, storms stripped off several meters of inshore sediments and temporarily revealed the wrecks, as well as an additional large vessel. The wrecks are now reburied.

During the brief time the shipwrecks were exposed, the Israel Antiquities Authority investigated one of them: a 32 meter vessel which still preserved its brass gudgeon (rudder socket) and many small artifacts, such as plates, a candlestick, and even a cooking pot with bones in it. Laboratory analyses completed this summer by the IAA revealed that the ship's wood came from Turkey. The team believes these ships may have belonged to the Egyptian navy under Admiral Osman Nurredin Bey, whose ships were severely damaged in his attempt to capture Akko in the Egyptian-Ottoman War of 1831. The town eventually fell to Egyptian land forces under Ibrahim Pasha in 1832.

"These ships have occasionally been exposed and buried again by storms since we found them," Buxton said. "We're in a race against time to find other ships in the area and learn from them before storms totally dislodge or destroy them."

Although shipwrecks from the 1800s are not the highest priorities in a region where civilization goes back thousands of years, Buxton is excited by the discovery for what it tells her about where much older ships may be found.

"Like many underwater archaeologists I'm very interested in finding a well-preserved example of an ancient multi-decked warship from the Hellenistic age," said Buxton. "These ships were incredible pieces of technology, but we don't know much about their design because no hulls have been found. However, a combination of unusual environmental and historical factors leads us to believe we have a chance of finding the remains of one of these ships off the northern coast of Israel."

Buxton believes that the ships they are looking for are likely buried in the coastal sediment, which has built up over the centuries through natural processes. However, time is not on their side. "That protective silt is now being stripped away," she said. "And it's being stripped away a lot faster than it was originally dumped, by a combination of development, environmental changes, and the effects of the Aswan Dam." The Nile River has historically deposited large quantities of silt in the area, but the dam has significantly reduced the flow of silt.

The archaeologists found the ships and another early modern vessel within Akko's modern harbor while testing their equipment in preparation for an ongoing survey out in deeper water. The sub-bottom profiler detects anomalies below the sea floor. "It's the gift that keeps on giving," Buxton said. "We found so many targets to explore that we didn't have time to check all of them, but even just having information about where things are helps Koby (Jacob Sharvit, director of the IAA Maritime Antiquities Unit) know where to look after any big storms."

One line of buried targets detected off the southern seawall of old Akko is particularly suggestive. Continuing excavations in this area over the summer revealed an alignment between these targets and a newly-discovered slipway and shipshed structure, which continued out under the sea floor 25 meters from the Ottoman city wall. The feature resembles other naval shipsheds found in places such as Athens where they were used to haul up ancient warships. The excavation project was initially undertaken to strengthen the eroding sea wall, but it also revealed Hellenistic masonry, pottery vessels, an ancient mooring stone, and a stone quay 1.3 meters below the modern sea level. The possibility that much more of the Hellenistic port lies well-preserved under the sea floor is exciting for the archaeologists, because it means that shipwrecks from earlier centuries that have so far not been found at Akko may simply be buried deeper down in the sediment.

"We've got fragmentary historic records for this area in the Hellenistic period, and now we've found a very important feature from the ancient harbor. Ancient shipwrecks are another piece of the puzzle that will help us to rewrite the story of this region at a critical time in Mediterranean history," she said.

Located on the northern coast of Israel, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Akko is one of the few cities in the Mediterranean with more than 5,000 years of maritime history. Also known as Acre, Ake and Ptolemais, its port was an important waypoint for the Phoenicians, Romans, Crusaders, Ottomans and other ancient maritime empires. In the Hellenistic period, it was bitterly fought over by the rival empires of Egypt and Syria.

"Understanding the history and archaeology of Akko's port is crucial to understanding the broader issues of maritime connectivity and the great power struggles that defined the history of the Eastern Mediterranean during the Hellenistic Age," Buxton said.

Mo., Ariz. reveal where Powerball winners were sold

By Elizabeth Chuck and Vignesh Ramachandran, NBC News

The record $580 million Powerball jackpot will be split by the owners of tickets sold in Missouri and Arizona, according to lottery officials. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.

Updated at 7:50 p.m. ET:?The search for the two big winners of Wednesday night?s Powerball drawing is narrowing.

Missouri lottery officials announced Thursday that one of the Powerball tickets worth $293.7 million was sold at a Trex Mart in Dearborn, Mo. And Arizona officials said the other winning ticket in the $587.5 million jackpot was sold at the 4 Sons Food Store in Fountain Hills, Ariz.

The Missouri winner will be announced at a press conference Friday, while officials have still not identified the Arizona winner.

The Arizona store that sold the ticket will receive a $25,000 bonus incentive, while the Missouri store will get $50,000.

Lottery officials have not said whether the winning numbers of Wednesday night's record drawing --?05 - 16 - 22 - 23 - 29 and Powerball 06 -- were picked by individuals or groups.

"It is so exciting to sell one of these Powerball tickets," Missouri Lottery executive director?May Scheve Reardon said in a press release Thursday. ?"In addition, we sold two tickets that matched all five white balls, which means they each win $1 million. Three millionaires in one night is a wonderful night!"

Reardon advised all winners to be sure to sign the back of their tickets and seek legal and financial advice. Missouri winners have 180 days to claim their prize.

NBC's Kerry Sanders has more on the record jackpot and looks at how the winner may have chosen their numbers.

In addition to the jackpot winners, Powerball officials said eight people won $2 million prizes and 58 other ticket holders won $1 million.

The jackpot had rolled over 16 consecutive times without a winner since Oct. 6, prompting?Americans to go on a ticket-buying spree in the run-up to the drawing. At one point, tickets were selling at a rate of 130,000 a minute nationwide ? about six times the volume from a week ago.

The Missouri and Arizona jackpot winners will share an estimated $385 million before taxes if they take the prize as a lump sum, or the $587.5 million can be paid out as annuities over three decades, the Multi-State Lottery Association told Reuters.

As lottery official Sue Dooley notes, tickets matching all five of the white balls in the record $580 million Powerball drawing, can be cashed in for $1 million in prize money.

Although this Powerball jackpot was a big one, it's not the largest lottery prize ever. That mark is held by the $656 million Mega Millions jackpot that was split by three ticket buyers earlier this year. The previous biggest Powerball prize was $365 million in 2006, shared by several ConAgra Foods workers in Lincoln, Neb.

Advice for the lucky people who won the huge Powerball jackpot
11 things more likely to happen than winning the Powerball jackpot

Powerball is played across 42 states, plus Washington, D.C., and the Virgin Islands.?All but five states -- Delaware, Kansas, Maryland, North Dakota and Ohio -- require the lottery to release the winning names to anyone who asks, according to the Powerball site.

The next Powerball drawing has been reset back to $40 million.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Pitch a Strike and Get Free Media Coverage ? Internet Marketing ...

making a media pitch - Internet Marketing - Online Marketing - Small Business Marketing CompanyOn Thursday November 22, I attended the Globe & Mail Small Business Summit at the MaRS Discovery District ? http://toronto.smallbusiness-summit.ca/ .? It was a great day full of insight and networking, I would recommend you attend next year.

Often, I?m asked by small business owners on how to get their name ?out-there? and get some PR or media coverage. ??Of course, on a limited budget, this can be difficult.? Well, one of the session?s at the Small Business Summit was a ?Dragon?s Den-Like? panel consisting of Globe and Mail Small Business Editor Sean Stanleigh, Ivor Tossell , tech journalist and Marivel Taruc, CBC news broadcaster.

The purpose of this session was to understand how to pitch your business or idea to a media outlet, be it web, print or TV and get some media coverage. ??There were 5 entrepreneurs that were pitching their business.

Each pitch was given 3 minutes!? That?s it!? And they had to do it in front of the panel and approximately 250 people!

Money was not the reward for the winning pitch, instead, it was a feature story in the Globe & Mail Small Business section.

I commend all the participants for pitching their businesses; not an easy task to stand there and get critiqued.? The panel gave some great feedback and below I captured 4 main points.

?

How-to-Pitch Your Business to the Media

1) Relevance to?current news stories

If you can tie your business into a current story in the news (past or future stories work too), it gives the media outlet more reason to consider your business because they can tie it to that lead story and ?ride-the-wave?.? For example, perhaps you are a software company that develops voting software for elections.? If there was a news story about voting mishaps during a recent election, that gives your business some leverage.

2) Hard numbers

Making statements out of thin-air does not help your cause.? If you say you are the largest distributor of baseball gloves in Canada, you better have some hard unbiased stats that show this.? The media is in the business of reporting ? truthful and honest reporting.? So, you can?t make claims that are business goals, they have to be reality.? The media?s reputation is on the line.

3) What makes you different

Media outlets, according to this panel, get hundreds of requests for stories per month. To be able to ?sell? their respective stories, they want to provide fresh stories to their audience that are unique.? So, if you can identify why YOUR BUSINESS is different, that will put you ahead of the other hundreds of requests.? ?Perhaps you make custom jewellery, but you use materials from developing communities around the world (like www.imoniq.com).? This can be distinctive because your business? is supporting developing entrepreneurial communities around the world -? a sense of social entrepreneurialism.

?4) Identify some challenges

Don?t pretend your business is perfect and has no challenges or competitors.? Remember, media wants to tell a story, so, if your small business isn?t strong enough to hold a story on its own, identify the problem and challenges surrounding it.? This way the media outlet can introduce your business by telling a story about those problems and challenges facing the community or society in general. For example, perhaps you provide counseling to youth.? If you identified trends about kids who are experiencing anxiety, perhaps, if you connected your business to ?bullying? in schools, you could get some traction.

Saga of Johnny Football part of college football's colorful lore

Watching Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel rise to the top of the college football world as the front-runner for the Heisman Trophy this season, I've been taken back to an interview I had with him early in his senior season at Kerrville Tivy in 2010.

Manziel had been outstanding in the Antlers' season-opening 71-3 rout of Fredericksburg the previous week, and I was writing a feature on him before Tivy's game against Madison the next night.

The feature turned out to be a news story when Manziel, who had committed to Oregon that June, told me he planned to make an unofficial visit to Texas A&M on the weekend of the Madison game.

If I live to be 99 years old, I don't think I'll ever forget talking with Manziel in Tivy coach Mark Smith's office that Thursday morning.

While saying he still was committed to Oregon, Manziel seemed intrigued by the possibility of playing for A&M, which had offered him a scholarship three days before my interview with him.

Manziel made it clear his main reason for taking a look at A&M was driven by his desire to play at a school where his parents could see him play regularly.

"My parents have sacrificed and given me great support since I started playing football, driving me to practice and to games when I was a kid," Manziel said. "It would hurt me if they didn't get a chance to see me play very often in college.

"There is a possibility I could change my mind. Not a high chance, but who knows? There is that possibility."

?

Manziel has remained close to high school coach

Manziel left no doubt he would reconsider his college choice if his visit to College Station went well.

Kens5.com was the first media outlet to report that Manziel was having second thoughts about his commitment to Oregon.

Indeed, Manziel's visit to A&M turned out to be the beginning of the end for the Ducks.

Manziel returned to College Station with his parents for another unofficial visit a week later and was back on campus on the weekend before he committed to the Aggies. All told, Manziel visited A&M on three consecutive weekends.

Three weeks to the day after A&M made its offer, Manziel called Oregon coach Chip Kelly from Smith's office to tell him he was backing out of his commitment. Manziel, who has become known as "Johnny Football" throughout the country, has been an Aggie since that moment.

"I was there when Johnny called Coach Kelly and he handled it like a man," Smith said Monday.

Smith, who just completed his first season as head coach at Judson, has remained close to Manziel since he graduated from Tivy in December 2010. A redshirt freshman, Manziel already has reached legendary status in college football with his uncanny knack for making big plays.

"Nothing he's done this season surprises me because we saw him do that at Tivy," Smith said. "Those of us who coached him knew his skills would translate to college. I think the surprise is in how fast it's occurring."

?

Manziel broke Newton's SEC total offense record

Johnny Football was already being mentioned as a Heisman Trophy candidate before he led A&M to a stirring victory over then-No. 1 Alabama on Nov. 10, and broke the Southeastern Conference's record for total offense with 4,600 yards two weeks later.

"Regardless of whether or not he wins the Heisman, Johnny knows it's going to play out like it should," Smith said. "He's not only a great football player, he's a special young man. He is, by far, the best player I've ever been around. I was blessed to have the opportunity to coach him. He was the best at rallying his team.

"There is no doubt he exudes confidence without being arrogant. No matter what the situation, he never gets flustered. He's always going to give credit to his teammates. That's just Johnny. He has a humility about him that reflects his commitment to the team."

Manziel broke Cam Newton's SEC total offense record in two fewer games than Newton did in his Heisman season at Auburn in 2010. He has passed for 3,419 yards and 24 touchdowns, and run for 1,181 yards and 19 TDs.

"I talked to Johnny on the phone after the Alabama game," Smith said. "He was as excited as could be. We text each other, too. I usually text him on Thursday or Friday before they play. I try to keep it breezy, keep it light, and just let him know that I'll be pulling for him."

Smith has seen Manziel play in person once this season.

"My wife and I went up there (College Station) for the Arkansas game," Smith said. "We (Judson Rockets) were off that week, so I had a chance to go. All of Johnny's other games, I've recorded on my DVR."

?

Johnny Football wanted to play for Longhorns

Manziel was born in the East Texas town of Tyler and lived there until he moved to Kerrville with his family when he was in the eighth grade. He got moved up to the Tivy varsity for the playoffs when he was a freshman, and became the varsity's starting quarterback midway through his sophomore season.

Manziel earned Parade All-America honors as a senior after passing for 3,609 yards and 45 TDs, and running for 1,674 yards and 30 TDs. He completed 228 of 347 passes and was intercepted only five times, and averaged 9.85 yards per carry.

For all his remarkable stats, Manziel didn't receive the attention from major-college recruiters that most Parade All-Americans get. Wary of his size -- Manziel is 6-foot-1 and 180 pounds -- many coaches thought he was too small to play quarterback at college football's highest level.

Smith still bristles when he's asked how such a playmaker could be overlooked by so many colleges.

Manziel had his heart set on playing at Texas, Smith said, but the Longhorns never offered him a scholarship.

"He would have played anything at Texas," Smith said. "He just wanted to be a Longhorn."

Assistant coach Duane Akina, who recruits the San Antonio area for UT, liked Manziel, Smith said, "but he couldn't sell the guy that makes the decisions."

How do you figure Johnny Football would look in burnt orange now, Mack Brown?

?

Aggies were slow to offer Manziel scholarship

Oregon started recruiting Manziel after his junior season and was the first school to offer him a scholarship. Iowa State followed but A&M was the only FBS school in Texas that recruited Manziel as a quarterback.

And just to be clear: The Aggies didn't exactly fall all over themselves to get Manziel's commitment initially. They weren't sold on him until early in his senior season.

"It's hard to understand," Smith said. "With all this early recruiting, the way they evaluate kids, I don't like it. I know a lot of college coaches don't, either, but they do it because the guy down the street is doing it. I think they miss some talented kids.

"In their defense, what they saw in Johnny was his sophomore and junior year, and most of the plays he made were with his feet. You had to spend time and watch him throw the ball in the spring before his senior season to see what a good passer he had become."

Smith said the A&M coach who was recruiting Manziel told him he liked Manziel, but cited his size as a drawback.

"He said, 'If he were a inch taller, I could sell him to Mike,'" Smith said, referring to former head coach Mike Sherman, who was fired last season. "I told that coach he reminded me of another A&M coach who had passed up Drew Brees.

"These college coaches need to quit worrying about how tall somebody is, and they better start looking at a player's heart and how productive he is. I always told college coaches that Johnny was a playmaker."

Alabama, among others, would attest to that.

Church 2063: Sexuality | TrinityDigitalMedia.com

In 1963, homosexuality was the punchline to a joke that you didn't want your mother to know you knew. Today, it's a a common lifestyle. When kids wanted to rebel, they would drink or smoke. Maybe they'd have premarital sex. Today, those are common choices although tobacco is giving way to marijuana and many states are even legalizing it.

Fifty years ago, miniskirts were about to come into fashion. The late sixties saw growth in fashion trends that showed more and more skin. They couldn't have imagined more conservative trends would return, but eventually college coeds would eventually go to spring break wearing thongs on their rear ends.

Now, several states are dealing with the implications of gender equality on clothing laws. If men aren't required to wear clothing that covers their chests, why should women be required to do so? New York already said that toplessness is permissible for both women and men, even though culture is slow to make the shift. In the election in November 2012, San Francisco voters narrowly voted to make indecent exposure illegal.

I don't think public nudity will be legal in all parts of the US in ten years. I do think that the people of 2063 will view our emphasis on covering certain body parts as prudish.

I'm not saying they'll be right, but that's the view. If you want to know how people will feel, think about your feeling around Muslim women who wear head scarves or more. It could be that Christian young women who chastely wear thong, string bikinis will be laughed at by their nude friends on the beach. It's funny to think of a thong as a modest body covering, but the tankini would have seemed radical fifty years ago, but is the bathing suit of choice among many Christian girls today who see the one-piece as too prudish, but the thong as too revealing.

Nudity won't be the only thing that we see more of in the next fifty years. I've mentioned trio and multiple marriages, but I think that we'll see dating relationships that are precursors to these marriages.

Looking for a wedding ring might not tell you if someone is done looking or not. A married woman might be looking for a wife to go with her husband or a second husband. Maybe some people will prefer dating married people. They'll reason that a husband has already made a commitment and since multiple marriages will be legal, he might be looking for another spouse.

It's possible that as spouses get used to their relationship, they'll think they can add spice by adding another person to the relationship. A husband who's lost interest in sex might encourage his wife to let him be the provider, but get a new husband to fulfill her sexual needs.

Instead of dealing with problems, people might think it's natural to add others. This reminds me of when I worked in tech support and installers would call up and just want to add more and more equipment to an installation to fix a problem, but instead they just complicated the problem. Relationships will be the same way. People will try to fix simple problems by making things more complicated.

Just as grocery stores now have contraceptives, they'll start carrying more sexually themed devices. While people used to have to go to certain areas of town or order online for these items, you'll see them next to the condoms in the pharmacy.

The sexual revolution of the 60s was stunted by the AIDS outbreak of the 80s. As medicine develops more and more remedies for AIDS and other diseases, a new free-love movement could surface again.

Labels like homosexual and heterosexual might seem antiquated as people choose sexual partners based on momentary preference and not lifestyle.

Just as we now sometimes hear people say, "I'm not gay, but I did experiment in college," we might hear people say "I sleep with whoever I want. It all works for me."

Believe it or not, this way of thinking is actually rather old. A friend of mine in seminary arrived with a masters degree in classical studies. He told me that ancient Greeks didn't think of themselves as homosexual, but that there was nothing wrong with any form of sexual expression they could think of. It wasn't unusual for older men to have a young male lover for a time before getting married to a woman to start a family.

The difference is that women are now equals, so we can probably imagine that some women might experiment with lesbianism before marrying a man for family reasons. Some women will be life-long lesbians, but moving back and forth between sexual lifestyles and practices won't be seen as unusual.

This also means that transexuals and transvestites might be quite common as people struggle to find their identities. Maybe a man will get breast implants and live as a transexual for a time before going back to life as a straight man and then dabbling in homosexual practices.

As science expands, its possible that gay and lesbian couples will no longer need a third party to have children. Perhaps lesbians will be able to harvest eggs from one partner and science will harvest the DNA and make synthetic sperm that can impregnate the other partner.

It's a more difficult problem to enable men to carry a baby to term, so perhaps an artificial uterus will be invented. In a similar procedure, a male's sperm can become an egg and the partner's sperm will enable a gay couple to have their own genetic offspring.

The artificial uterus might mean that straight couples choose not to carry their own babies. Many women would now prefer not to have some of the changes that their bodies undergo as a part of pregnancy. This will mean that some women will have children that are genetically theirs, but who weren't gestated in a human womb. If the artificial uterus is invented, it might start as a way to help women who've had hysterectomies or who are unable to carry a baby to term, but these other uses will follow soon.

A possible unintended consequence of early babies born this way might be a lack of bonding as infants are strangers to their parents' voices and heart beats. This might be easy to overcome, but at risk infants might need extra care.

For churches, the changes in sex and family will be frightening. The challenge will be to bring people with new family and sexual patterns into the church so that they don't dismiss God immediately as judging. I'll probably be dead when these things come to fruition, but it won't be easy to love people who don't think non-traditional relationships are wrong. It will be hard to balance grace and truth, but just as the early church welcomed former temple prostitutes and others who had more difficult sexual pasts, so the mid-twenty-first century must learn to love people despite whatever their past.

Post Topic ? The Sexiest Drink on Earth by Mark Spivak

How did a something that tastes like castor oil flavored with tree bark become the sexiest drink on
earth?

Gaspare Campari invented his famous potion in 1860 by infusing sixty herbs, spices, barks and fruit
peels in a mixture of alcohol and distilled water. It became a sensation, and Campari turned into an
entrepreneur. There?s only one problem: Campari is bitter, and human beings have taste receptors for
bitterness that function as an early warning system, alerting us that we are about to consume something
that might be toxic or poisonous.

Imagine the dilemma for your brain as you take a sip of cold, refreshing Campari and soda. Part of your
mind is saying, ?Don?t drink this?it might kill you!? In another sector of your cranium, though, the drink
is perceived to be sophisticated and desirable. Given that more than 27 million bottles of Campari are
sold each year, the brain has obviously found a way to disregard the potential dangers of bitterness. In
researching my book, Iconic spirits: An Intoxicating History, I spoke to scientists doing research on the
physiology of taste, and they all had a theory on how this conflict was resolved.

More importantly, though, how did Campari come to be regarded as the sexiest drink on earth?

The shimmering red potion may be infused with dozens of herbs and spices, but the advertising images
have always contained a strong dose of forbidden fruit. In its marketing materials, the company
describes Campari as a ?symbol of passion? and goes on to say that this passion ?expresses itself in
terms of seduction, seduction and transgression??

The famous 1920 poster by Marcello Dudovich is a good example. Two lovers are locked in an embrace
that can only be described as smoldering, balanced precariously on the edge of a sofa and enhanced by
a background of soft crimson light. Two glasses, one half-filled with Campari, sit on a nearby table. The
woman?s hand rests on the man?s cheek in a classic gesture, pushing him away and embracing him at
the same time.

In 1998 Campari began working with the celebrated Indian director Tarsem, who created the series
of ?Red Passion? ads. The campaign was the first in Italy to present female homosexuality in a
straightforward yet compelling way; from there it went on to target other social norms. In a 2005
commercial, a man stands at the bar during a reception when he spots a tall, beautiful woman on
the other side of the room. They exchange looks. The man obtains a Campari on the rocks from the
bartender and follows the woman to a secludedpart of the building. His hand slips as he approaches her,
and hesplashes Campari on her dress and cleavage. Slowly and tantalizingly, the woman removes her
top and reveals herself to be a man. The man then takes off his shirt to display his bra and the fact that
he?s actually a woman. The ad blends mystery and intrigue, explores repressed desires, and blurs the
lines of gender identity?all in sixty seconds.

So relax and enjoy a cocktail made with Campari, whether it?s a Negroni, Americano, Garibaldi (Campari
and orange juice) or a classic Campari and soda?but make sure that someone you care about is there to
enjoy it with you.

Greece Is The Top Issue For The Week - Business Insider

The big story of the week? Does Greece finally get a bailout check.

SocGen's Michala Marcusen has the topic up top as her top topic of the week:

GREECE TAKE 3 Monday?s Eurogroup will see a third attempt at reaching agreement on what will de facto amount to the third financial assistance programme for Greece. While a German press report this weekend suggested that some form of ?conditional? forgiveness could be on the cards as of 2015, the official position out of Berlin is that official sector debt forgiveness is not on the menu. To reach debt sustainability, a cocktail of measures is on the table, including lower interest rates on Greek debt, debt buybacks and a compromise with the IMF to extend the target date for debt at 120% of GDP to 2022 from 2022. MARKET ISSUES: While there is a good chance that an agreement is reached on Monday, we consider it unlikely that this will make Greek public finances sustainable on anything but paper. The hope is no doubt that the Greek issue will not need to be revisited until after the German election due in autumn 2013.

We'll be all over this tomorrow.

Internet Marketing Search Engine Optimization SEM SEO service ...

There are millions of different online businesses out there, and if you expect your particular business to be successful, then you need to implement some sound marketing techniques. By reading through this information, you will find valuable information on how to best utilize the Internet for marketing purposes. Keep reading for great Internet marketing information.

Think about methods you want to use to advertise your webpage. Free or cheap methods to promote your business are to make a blog or use social networks to promote your business. There are many ways to get people to come to your site. It just takes some creativity.

Make sure that you maximize the quality of third-party security with transactions. Many different companies offer a variety of secure services. VeriSign is one of the programs that helps to keep financial information private. Security systems can cost money, but they are absolute necessities for doing business online safely.

Internet marketing is both similar to, and different from, other marketing tactics. Be ready for any changes that may come up, like if search engines stop putting focus on title tags. Knowing this, you might need to place more effort in marketing a video to viral audiences.

Every company should have both an interesting slogan and a professional logo, no matter the size of the company. You customers will remember you by how you portray your brand. Customers tend to remember catchy slogans for quite a while. When a customer is ready to buy a product, he might remember your slogan even if he doesn?t remember the name of your business. In the age of the internet, that?s not a big problem.

Sending emails is a great way to stay in touch with your customers, but make sure you send out varied content. A block of links that remain the same with every email your customers receive is easy to start ignoring. Create variety in your emails to gain attention.

Another option would be combining products into a package deal and selling it for a lower price. That way the customer gets more bang for their buck. Advertisements for sales or promotions must be detailed and contain the exact conditions of the offer.

Use social networks such as Facebook and Twitter to connect with your audience. You can use these sites to advertise new offers or to share your latest articles. However, make sure to not over-advertise on these websites. Rather, strive to post useful and smart messages with intermittent marketing messages interspersed.

Making your site stand out is a great Internet promotion advantage you can use. Making your site stand out is what drives visitors towards your site, and there are a lot out there so this is a good strategy. You should showcase something you offer that no one else does.

Make a webpage specifically built for public relations. This is where you can include information that online magazines and newspapers can publish. Not only is this simple to do, but it also is an excellent way to promote your business.

Spin the positives when selling your goods. Concentrate on the value your product or service will add to their life. Tell them how it will make their life better. Having a positive attitude, and being confident that your product will work to the customer?s benefit, will encourage more sales.

High-quality graphics of your products can make or break an online sale. Your customers need to be able to visualize the items they are about to buy, and see the detail of your high-quality products. Allow customers to post their own images of your products to show how they use them. If your product warrants use of ?before and after? pictures, they can be an effective selling tool.

If you can you should give your away something branded for free to help spread awareness of your business. For example, if it?s a wallpaper, submit it to sites that offer free wallpapers. Many websites give their customers freebies, downloads, and e-zines that accept links for you to submit your site.

As stated above, Internet marketing helps your business get noticed. Traditional advertising methods just cannot give you the visibility and the worldwide presence that Online marketing can provide. Use the helpful tips here, and find out what works best for you.

The formatting of your website?s text plays an important role in its attractiveness and success. You can emphasize a single word using tags to underline, bold, or italicize it. This can help to distinguish how you want your customer to receive a certain message, which can help with the clarity of what you are trying to say.

Civil rights leader Lawrence Guyot dies at 73

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Lawrence Guyot, a civil rights leader who survived jailhouse beatings in the Deep South in the 1960s and went on to encourage generations to get involved, has died. He was 73.

Guyot had a history of heart problems and suffered from diabetes, and died at home in Mount Rainier, Md., his daughter Julie Guyot-Diangone said late Saturday. She said he died sometime Thursday night; other media reported he passed away Friday.

A Mississippi native, Guyot (pronounced GHEE-ott) worked for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and served as director of the 1964 Freedom Summer Project, which brought thousands of young people to the state to register blacks to vote despite a history of violence and intimidation by authorities. He also chaired the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, which sought to have blacks included among the state's delegates to the 1964 Democratic National Convention. The bid was rejected, but another civil rights activist, Fannie Lou Hamer, addressed the convention during a nationally televised appearance.

Guyot was severely beaten several times, including at the notorious Mississippi State Penitentiary known as Parchman Farm. He continued to speak on voting rights until his death, including encouraging people to cast ballots for President Barack Obama.

"He was a civil rights field worker right up to the end," Guyot-Diangone said.

Guyot participated in the 40th anniversary of the Freedom Summer Project to make sure a new generation could learn about the civil rights movement.

"There is nothing like having risked your life with people over something immensely important to you," he told The Clarion-Ledger in 2004. "As Churchill said, there's nothing more exhilarating than to have been shot at ? and missed."

His daughter said she recently saw him on a bus encouraging people to register to vote and asking about their political views. She said he was an early backer of gay marriage, noting that when he married a white woman, interracial marriage was illegal in some states. He met his wife Monica while they both worked for racial equality.

"He followed justice," his daughter said. "He followed what was consistent with his values, not what was fashionable. He just pushed people along with him."

Susan Glisson, executive director of the William Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation at the University of Mississippi, called Guyot "a towering figure, a real warrior for freedom and justice."

"He loved to mentor young people. That's how I met him," she said.

When she attended Ole Miss, students reached out to civil rights activists and Guyot responded.

"He was very opinionated," she said. "But always ? he always backed up his opinions with detailed facts. He always pushed you to think more deeply and to be more strategic. It could be long days of debate about the way forward. But once the path was set, there was nobody more committed to the path."

Glisson said Guyot's efforts helped lay the groundwork for the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

"Mississippi has more black elected officials than any other state in the country, and that's a direct tribute to his work," she said.

Guyot was born in Pass Christian, Miss., on July 17, 1939. He became active in civil rights while attending Tougaloo College in Mississippi, and graduated in 1963. Guyot received a law degree in 1971 from Rutgers University, and then moved to Washington, where he worked to elect fellow Mississippian and civil rights activist Marion Barry as mayor in 1978.

"When he came to Washington, he continued his revolutionary zeal," Barry told The Washington Post on Friday. "He was always busy working for the people."

Guyot worked for the District of Columbia government in various capacities and as a neighborhood advisory commissioner.

D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton told The Post in 2007 that she first met Guyot within days of his beating at a jail in Winona, Miss. "Because of Larry Guyot, I understood what it meant to live with terror and to walk straight into it," she told the newspaper. On Friday, she called Guyot "an unsung hero" of the civil rights movement.

"Very few Mississippians were willing to risk their lives at that time," she said. "But Guyot did."

In recent months, his daughter said he was concerned about what he said were Republican efforts to limit access to the polls. As his health was failing, he voted early because he wanted to make sure his vote was counted, he told the AFRO newspaper.

Funeral services are pending.

Preparation for the Great Critical Incident: First Aid Emergency ...

By J.W. Caesar

Hosea 4: 6 (KJV) My people perish from a lack of knowledge.

Knowledge is power for survival when it comes to overcoming disasters. It is vital to get educated on how to survive in the event of a myriad disaster scenerios. Many people die or get injured because they did not adequately plan, prepare or mitigate for unseen emergencies. In order to win the war on disasters; American citizens must take disaster preparation seriously and strengthen themselves mentally, spiritually, and physically to overcome the challenges in the future.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency states on their website that there are actions that should be taken before, during, and after an event that are unique to each hazard. Each person or group should identify the hazards that have happened or could happen in their area and plan for the unique actions for each hazard. They further note that mitigation can be defined as actions to reduce loss of life and property by decreasing the impact of disasters.? What this means is??taking action now??before the next disaster?to reduce human and financial consequences later (analyzing risk, reducing risk, insuring against risk).? Effective mitigation requires that we all understand local risks, address the hard choices, and invest in long-term community well-being. Without these actions, people jeopardize their safety, financial security, and self-reliance and quality of life.

Building an emergency kit with first aid equipment and taking medical classes are best practices in mitigation that can assist in reducing risk and loss to families and the community.? It is important to analyze what type of hazards would affect the community during a disaster, as well the decision to shelter in place or evacuate to a safe location.? By following this risk analysis process, it would help clarify what type and size of container or bag to place first aid items inside, the quantity, what too and what not to pack, where to pack it, the environment, hazard scenario and number of people it can provide care too. Your first aid kit or emergency supplies should be designed around an all hazards approach that insures against the risk of not being able to treat or prevent hazards from overtaking you and your group. These hazards can cause temporary or permanent damage to the critical infrastructure of this nation. Therefore everyone should be a stakeholder in public safety and security of this nation. As a result, many are designing their first aid kits around temporary disaster events where there is a short recovery period, while others are preparing their kits for a total collapse of the system where medical resources will be hard to find.

Caution: for medical legal and health safety reasons-Disaster Preparers should think about:

  1. Preparing physically, mentally, and spiritually now to adapt to changes caused by impact of disasters and?continuity of civil and infastructure recovery.
  2. Familiarizing with their local, state and federal laws on the boundaries of giving care to humans, pets and livestock.
  3. Getting prior training on how to use the items in the first aid kit.
  4. Working as a trained and covenant group, not loner.
  5. Trying to get written certification or medical authority to perform certain procedures.
  6. Not going beyond their scope of practice or their medical certifications.
  7. Abiding by the local laws of what is allowed in your first aid or medical kit.
  8. (Personal, Force, Asset?Protection)Avoiding making themselves a target for thieves, murderers, drug addicts that use false emergency scenes or requests for help.

A first aid kit can be purchased at many stores, disaster preparedness organizations and online merchants. Medical supplies can also be purchased individually to build your own kit.? Some have also combined the two as one mitigation measure. Others have crafted their own replacement first aid products by improvising. They use tampons for bleeding, card board for splints, and other homemade items, or pet supplies for their kit?s inventory. The real issue is finding the right items and kit skin for your needs. There are many questionable claims to first kits such as the number of people that it can actually treat in an emergency, the quality, sterility and durability of items, the protective covering of the container or bag and excessive prices for minimal supplies. This is why it is vital to do a risk analysis and make appropriate mitigation decisions for your own needs from an all hazards approach.

Medical Supplies and their Skins

Medical supplies for a first aid kit can be put inside of a various items that are all weather resistant, waterproof, durable, floatable, not previously had any toxic or corrosive materials stored inside of it, and clearly marked as a first aid or medical kit. Ziploc bags and plastic trash bags can give extra all weather protection and longetivity of items. The kit should also be easy to carry with straps or handles, have reasonable space or compartments for medical items, and easy to open or secure during an emergency. The size and type of first aid emergency kit may be based on varied factors such as the personal needs of the individual, group, or community, different hazards, ?medical training, number of sick and injured, terrain, response time, life cycle of disaster, use with vehicles, walking distance, evacuation, and weather.

Examples:

  • Military Unfolding zippered Aid Bag M-3 & M-17
  • Military Chest with handles
  • Military Aid Station chest containers
  • Military hard plastic or metal containers

  • Luggage with wheels and handle
  • Purse or designer bag
  • Lunch box
  • Square or rectangle storage containers
  • Tupperware containers
  • Plastic Ice Cream or used Food Containers
  • Hunting vests
  • Belt Pouches

A well-stocked and well maintained list of items in the first aid kit should be kept up to date at all times by rotating and replacing items.? A best practice for maintaining the mitigation investment of life saving equipment is doing inventory and preventative maintenance checks before and after using the kit. It can take place on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, or yearly cycle. ?The outside and inside of the emergency kit should be inspected for damage such as cracks, tears or holes. Mitigations measures such as health safety inspections for spoilage and expiration dates of items are important also.? However, some questions have been raised about keeping items regardless of expiration dates because of future scarcity of items during extreme disaster periods. These questions should be addressed by medical authorities who are expert in disasters and laws of the land. ?In any case, some items can lose their shelf life, sterility, durability, and may become toxic because of the hot storage temperatures. Another temperature issue is freezing. ?Solutions can freeze causing the containers to crack and break causing contamination of other items or damaging the first aid container.

The kit should work as expected: treat injuries and save life when you need it and cause no harm when it is not needed. It is vital to verify that the items consisting within the kit still function as expected, including the batteries in the medical equipment. The first aid kit should be stored in a place that is of the right temperature for medical supplies, in a safe location, away from pests, where no damage can occur, can be accessible to adults, but not to children or pets that can be poisoned and injured.

In summary, disasters can happen at anytime and anyplace. The consequences of not preparing for them may be immeasurable. To minimize this risk, it is vital to mitigate these impacts by building an emergency first aid kit based on analyzing, reducing, and insuring against future risks. It would be wise to assemble an emergency first aid kit that is adaptable and maintainable for your needs, take first aid classes, get familiarized with medical ? legal laws, learn how to take protective measures in emergency situations, and establish mutual-aid and covenant partnerships well in advance of an emergency situation. All of these steps help reduce the impact of hazards associated with future events and improve the chances of winning the war over disasters.? Americans, must remember that everyone is a stakeholder in public safety, God given freedoms, continuity of civil government,?and protecting the critical infastructure and key resources of this nation.

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? Rutgers officially isn't swapping the Big East for the Big Ten for another two years.

The 21st-ranked Scarlet Knights sure looked ready to check out early, though, in a lifeless 27-6 loss to Pittsburgh on Saturday.

Though Rutgers (9-2, 5-1 Big East) still managed to clinch a share of its first conference title after No. 19 Louisville was stunned at home by Connecticut, the Scarlet Knights head into a showdown with the Cardinals next Thursday reeling.

"It (stinks) to lose, but we still have something to play for," Rutgers quarterback Gary Nova said.

Even if it was the Panthers (5-6, 2-4) who performed like the team with everything on the line.

Pitt's defense swarmed the Scarlet Knights all afternoon. Nova completed just 18 of 37 passes for 157 yards with a touchdown and an interception and left briefly in first half after getting slammed to the ground on his right (throwing) shoulder.

"Their defensive linemen are really good," Nova said. "They put a lot of pressure on me, and we really didn't execute well enough in protection on their pass rush to make a difference."

The Scarlet Knights came in the Big East's biggest surprise, rising to the cusp of the school's first Bowl Championship Series berth despite losing program architect Greg Schiano to the NFL last winter.

First-year coach Kyle Flood stressed his team would not be distracted by an eventful week in which the program announced it was heading to the Big Ten in 2014, though the Scarlet Knights appeared to have their minds on other things while falling into an early 21-0 deficit.

"I didn't hear any of the talk about anything (other than the game)," Flood said. "To me, we had a focused football team coming in here, but we just didn't execute on the football field."

There were no such issues for the Panthers, who continued their maddening inconsistency while keeping their hopes for a fifth straight bowl appearance alive.

Tino Sunseri passed for 227 yards and two touchdowns in his last home game and fellow senior Ray Graham ran for 113 yards and a score as the Panthers beat a ranked opponent for the second time this season thanks to some words of inspiration from the 18 players taking their final bow at Heinz Field.

"We just told (the underclassmen) to leave it out on the field," said Graham, who moved into third on the school's all-time rushing list. "If you're not ready to play, stay inside this locker room. That's one of those attitudes that we have."

The Panthers have alternated two-game losing streaks and two-game winning streaks all fall, leading first-year coach Paul Chryst to joke he hoped the pattern would continue over the final two weeks, allowing the Panthers to play beyond Dec. 1.

It shouldn't be an issue if Pitt can take the intensity it showed during an emotional Senior Day to South Florida next week.

Chryst began the afternoon hugging each of the seniors during pregame introductions, a sign how of hard he's worked to restore a sense of trust between the players and the program after Pitt went through four coaches in a span of 14 months, culminating with Chryst's hiring in January.

The seniors believe Pitt is heading in the right direction, and then went out and showed it by having little trouble with the Scarlet Knights in the final game between the two teams for the foreseeable future with Pitt heading to the ACC next fall.

Pitt outgained Rutgers 365-207, won the field position battle and controlled both sides of the line of scrimmage after finding its footing in the second quarter.

"We put it together today," wide receiver Mike Shanahan said. "I don't think we've played 60 minutes like that all season."

Certainly not on defense.

The Scarlet Knights had the ball eight times in the first half, and punted eight times. Nova never got comfortable in the blustery conditions and Pitt smothered whichever Rutgers back happened to carry the ball.

"If you watched Pitt over the course of the year, you saw that they were capable of playing really good on offense and defense," Rutgers safety Duron Harmon said. "They beat up on Virginia Tech and should have beat Notre Dame, so we knew it wasn't going to be easy coming in here."

It wasn't.

Sunseri hit Shanahan for a 16-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter to put the Panthers up and Graham made it 14-0 on a 1-yard touchdown plunge before the Panthers showed just how far they've come under Chryst's direction during a flawless 2-minute drill late in the half.

Taking over at the Pitt 45 with 1:19 to go, Sunseri directed the Panthers 55 yards in nine plays, the final one a perfect strike to Ed Tinker from 13 yards out that put the Panthers up 21-0 at the break.

Kevin Harper tacked on a 39-yard field goal early in the third quarter to make it 24-0. Rutgers finally got on board on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Nova to Brandon Coleman late in the third quarter but the 2-point conversion failed and Rutgers never threatened to make it interesting.

The blowout left the Scarlet Knights plenty of time to ponder how things went wrong while getting a headstart on what will be a de facto Big East championship game at home on Thursday night.

"All the marbles are out there for us, and it's a short week," defensive tackle Scott Vallone said. "So, this is for everything. This is why you play football. Sure, we're disappointed, but we still have everything to play for Thursday night. And that has to be our focus."

Apple Mac mini (Late 2012)

The Apple Mac mini (Late 2012) may look the same?it is, after all identical to the Mac mini (Thunderbolt)?but it has been updated with Intel's latest Ivy Bridge processor, faster USB 3.0 ports, and given a performance boost with Apple's new Fusion drive. It's everything we loved about the Apple Mac mini (Thunderbolt) , just faster, making it an easy pick for Editors' Choice.

Design and Features
The Mac mini is just what you expect from an Apple product. The design is the very picture of minimalist refinement, a CNC-milled aluminum block housing a full desktop-worth of hardware. And, true to form for Apple, it looks exactly like the previous iteration, and very similar to the model before that?the last easily spotted change on the Mac mini was when Apple dropped the optical drive and added a Thunderbolt port.

Measuring 1.4 by 7.7 by 7.7 inches (HWD), the compact Mac mini is small enough to sit unobtrusively on your desk, next to your display and keyboard. The rounded corners and subtle curves will be familiar looking to anyone that's seen an Apple product in the last few years. Unlike other tiny desktops that set up vertically, like the Polywell Poly i1000A-3770T , the Mac mini sticks with the low horizontal design it has used for years. On the top is a glossy black Apple logo; on the bottom is a round black plastic hatch. It can be opened without any tools, giving you a limited view of the internals, only providing real access to a few specific components. RAM modules can be added and swapped, the fan removed for cleaning, though the rest of the components can be accessed, assuming you have the necessary tools and a lot of patience. In such a small, tightly packed package, there's not really room for upgrades.

Apple has beefed up several features in the new Mac mini. The USB ports have all been upgraded to USB 3.0, though the ports aren't labeled as such, nor do they have the blue port connectors to indicate as such. Joining the faster USB ports are the same port used before, with a Thunderbolt port (which doubles as a mini-DisplayPort), FireWire 800 connection, HDMI output, an SDXC card slot, and audio line in and line out connections. Gigabit Ethernet is joined by 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0. It's a robust selection of features for such a small system; other compact desktops often drop features in the interest of saving space, such as the Shuttle X6100 , which omits Wi-Fi connectivity.

The processor has been upgraded to the latest Ivy Bridge technology, and our review unit was outfitted with a 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 quad-core processor and 4GB of 1600MHz DDR3 memory. Last year's $799 mid-tier model had a Core i5 processor in it. There are also 8GB and 16GB configurations available (for an extra $100 and $300, respectively). Graphics processing got a bump with the integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000, but this time around there is no configuration available with a discrete GPU. The Mac mini also equipped with Apple's new Fusion drive technology and the latest version of Mac OS X Mountain Lion.

Fusion Drive
The Mac mini's specifications tell us that our model is equipped with a 1.12TB Fusion Drive, but that's not even half of the story. Apple's Fusion Drive combines hard disk and flash storage?Apple's nomenclature for both solid-state drives and custom flash modules?but it's neither a hybrid drive, nor is it a traditional dual drive. Instead of there being two drive volumes to manage (which can be a nuisance for the tech savvy, and downright mystifying for others), the Mac mini presents the two drives as one volume. As far as managing your files and programs, that's all you need to know, because the Fusion Drive software does the rest.

Pull back the curtain a bit, and there's more going on. Every piece of data?be it program, media file, document, and even the operating system?is initially written to the 128GB of Flash storage to provide the faster performance offered by Flash media. As your data is used from day to day, however, the drive shifts the less frequently used data to the 1TB hard drive, which offers slower speed, but more storage capacity. The result is speedy SSD performance for the data you use most frequently, without the cramped storage you'd contend with on a pure SSD.

What makes this set up different from hybrid drives, however, is that the Flash storage is not acting as a cache, mirroring data from the drive. Also, the evaluation process is ongoing, continuously evaluating each piece of data as it is accessed by the user, shifting it back and forth to maximize performance. Once your Mac mini gets into a routine and is optimized, this setup can save wear and tear on the spinning hard drive, since oft-used programs and files will eventually reside on Flash storage. All of this work happens in the background, with data evaluated in real time, and shifted to and from the Flash storage during idle times so as not to slow down performance during data intensive actions. From the algorithmic evaluation of data use to the shifting of data, it all happens seamlessly in the background, and offers optimal performance without the need for constant tweaking.

Mac OS X and Software
Like the other members of the current Mac family, the Mac mini comes preinstalled with OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8.2 on our review unit), along with programs from iLife 2011, like iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand. The programs themselves are top-rated, and Mountain Lion itself was picked as one of the best tech products of 2012. It also features all of the same gesture support seen in the MacBook Pro line-up, so you might consider getting an Apple Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad to take advantage of the intuitive controls.

In addition to the operating system and programs, Apple covers the Mac mini with a one-year warranty, and offers free tech support for the first 90 days after purchase. For extra protection and longer coverage, you can also purchase AppleCare ($149 per year).

Performance
Apple Mac mini (Late 2012) With the new processing hardware, and the bump from dual-core Core i5 to quad-core Core i7, the Mac mini (Late 2012) more than doubled the processing performance over the previous iteration, scoring 5.95 points where the Mac mini (Thunderbolt) scored 2.69 points. It's necessarily a fair comparison, however, because the hardware is so different. Alternatively, the Polywell Poly i1000A-3770T, which has a 2.5GHz Intel Core i7-3770T processor, scored 6.30 points.

Apple Mac mini (Late 2012)

The Mac mini also made quick work of our current multimedia tests, finishing Handbrake (version 0.9.8) in 37 seconds, and Photoshop CS6 in 3 minutes 58 seconds. While the Polywell Poly i1000A-3770T has slightly faster raw performance, the Mac mini's Core i7 still offers enough processing power to continue to feel speedy even after a few years of use.

Though the integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 is more than sufficient for most day-to-day tasks, it isn't enough to support high-end 3D gaming. When tested with Heaven at both medium and high settings, it failed to produce playable results, rendering 19 frames per second (fps) and 12 fps, respectively. The Intel HD Graphics 4000 are certainly enough to play games with lighter requirements, such as Torchlight or one of the World of Warcraft titles.

While this configuration may not be the most inexpensive member of the Mac family?the starting configuration sells for a more affordable $599?the Apple Mac mini (Late 2012) compact desktop offers top features and performance to spare. While the previous Editors' Choice Polywell Poly i1000A-3770T does boast a slightly beefier processor, it doesn't offer the highly polished refinement offered by Mac mini. The seamless 1.12TB Fusion Drive is superb, and the array of display outputs and connectivity options is far larger than most compact desktops can muster. Add in the beautiful design and industry-leading operating system, and the Mac mini is an easy pick for our Editors' Choice.
