Ecuador striker Christian Benitez dies in Qatar, according to the Al Jaish football club

DOHA, Qatar - Ecuador striker Christian Benitez died Monday, a day after playing in a match for Qatari club El Jaish, the team said.

The club said the 27-year-old Benitez, who moved from Mexican club America to play in Qatar this year, died Monday but provided no further details.

"The club would like to offer its sincere condolences to the family of the player," the club said in a statement. "His sudden departure is a big shock for each member of the technical and administrative staff. He was a player that over the short period he was here was regarded for his high moral character."

El Jaish played Qatar Sports on Sunday in the Sheik Jassim Cup, a warm-up tournament for the upcoming football season. Benitez, who also spent a season in England with Birmingham, was in the lineup.

The match was played in hot and humid conditions, which are typical of the Persian Gulf at this time of year.

"The player participated for the first time with the team during yesterday's match against Qatar Sports Club in the Sheik Jassim Cup without complaining of any health problems," the club said.

Qatar will host the 2022 World Cup and the searing temperatures have prompted many former football stars as well as FIFA President Sepp Blatter to call for the competition to be moved to the cooler, winter months. Blatter plans to ask FIFA's executive committee later this year to move it.

AP Source: Obama to meet with Mideast negotiators

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A White House official says President Barack Obama will meet Tuesday morning with Israeli and Palestinian negotiators involved in a new round of peace talks.

The meeting was to happen at the White House as a second day of talks overseen by the State Department was getting underway.

The Washington negotiations are the result of Secretary of State John Kerry's six months of furious shuttle diplomacy. A previous Obama administration effort to restart stalled talks collapsed quickly in 2010.

The official insisted on anonymity in order to confirm the meeting before it was formally announced.

7 injured, 3 of them critically, after fiery blasts rock Florida propane plant

A series of explosions engulfed a propane plant in flames in Tavares, Florida, late Monday. This photo was taken at 11.36 p.m. from a location between 1-2 miles from the blast.

By M. Alex Johnson, Staff Writer, NBC News

A combination of human error and equipment failure might have caused a series of explosions that engulfed a propane plant in flames in Tavares, Fla., late Monday, injuring eight people and forcing evacuations for a half-mile around the scene, authorities said.

The explosions began as a fire spread through the Blue Rhino plant,?near Orlando,?about 10:30 p.m. ET, Lake County sheriff's Lt. John Herrell told reporters early Tuesday.

Plant officials say all employees of the plant are accounted for. All of those injured were in the plant when the fire started.

Watch live coverage on WESH-TV

Tavares Fire Chief?Richard Keith said Tuesday morning that sabotage is not expected. The fire marshal is on site to do a full investigation.?

Residents of the area told NBC station WESH of Orlando that flames from the explosions could be seen for several miles, but there were no reports of damage to the surrounding buildings. ?

Flames from the Blue Rhino propane plant in Tavares, Fla., seen from the air Monday night.

"It sounds like bombs are going off," Norma Haygood, a nearby resident, told WESH.

No deaths were immediately reported, Herrell said. Three male victims were in critical condition, the Orlando Regional Medical Center, told NBC News.?

Two were airlifted; a third was transported by ambulance. ?

Authorities initially declared a one-mile evacuation zone around the plant, but they later scaled that back to a half-mile, effective until 6 a.m. ET.?

"We feel that there is no longer any danger" to the area around the plant, Herrell said.

Twenty-four or 26 people were scheduled to work the night shift at the 33,000-acre facility, according to plant managers, Herrell said. Authorities initially said 15 people were unaccounted for, but Herrell later said the company's management said that they had accounted for all of the people it knew were in the plant at the time of the initial explosion.

NBC News/Bing Maps

Some of them showed up at others location, according to Blue Rhino, Herrell said. He said he had no further information on where the others were.

The plant housed about 53,000 20-pound propane cylinders, Herrell said.

"They store the propane cylinders on different parts of the property, and as the fire spread, there were more and more explosions," he said.?

Explosions continued until 1 a.m. ET Tuesday, roughly 2? hours after the first blasts were reported.

Don Ingram, former plant production supervisor at the plant, said his son felt one of the explosions in their home 6 miles away.

Ingram told WESH that the back area of the plant is "lined with propane tanks stacked four or five high on plastic pallets."

"I don't think you fight this fire," he said. "It's just too dangerous."

Blue Rhino is a subsidiary of Ferrellgas Partners, the second-largest distributor of propane in the U.S.

Spanish High-Speed Train Crash Offers Safety-System Lessons

The tragic incident has brought a decades-old Spanish success story crashing to a halt

The driver of the high-speed train that derailed July 25 at a sharp curve in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, killing at least 80 passengers and?injuring 130 more, told controllers he took the curve at around 190 kilometers per hour, despite an 80 kph speed limit. He survived the crash and is now under investigation by local authorities. Even if the driver turns out to have been responsible for speeding, rail passengers might wonder what else had to fail in the safety system to allow one man?s error to harm so many people.

The crash is the first fatal accident of a high-speed train in Spain, which launched its high-speed network in 1992 and now serves around 100,000 passengers a day. Authorities have not yet assigned it a cause, but it may turn out to be an anomaly. "The most common [reasons for a derailment are] problems with the track or rail and equipment," says mechanical engineer George Bibel at the University of North Dakota, author of Train Wreck: The Forensic of Rail Disasters. Whereas train accidents from Connecticut to France have made news lately, derailments are a declining threat, at least in the U.S., where they dropped about 90 percent from 1976 to 2011.

The decline has resulted in part from improved monitoring of aging infrastructure such as rails, wheels and bearings, Bibel says. Spanish media reported that the tracks on which this train was running were not designed for the fastest class of high-speed trains. The implication is that the tracks may somehow have contributed to the accident. Lower-grade tracks do vibrate more and wear down faster. And using the same tracks for multiple types of trains, such as high-speed, longer local passenger trains, or even freight, may also promote uneven metal fatigue. Changing temperatures or wet tracks can combine with worn-down train wheels or uneven loading of a train to promote a derailment. Yet things as basic as regular inspections of hot spots with an infrared sensor or of metal fatigue with an ultrasound sensor can alert rail operators to aging infrastructure.

Higher-tech control systems are also emerging. Both the U.S. and Europe are adopting semi-automated braking systems designed to take over from speeding drivers. The track at the accident site, which was very close to the station, used older-generation signaling technology called ASFA, which alerts the driver to upcoming speed restrictions but cannot override his or her control. The Madrid-Barcelona high-speed train line, in contrast, uses the Level 2 European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), which can override the driver. The train drivers union announced that the tragedy "could have been avoided" if ERTMS had been installed on that stretch of track. Even if that is true, Spain already has one of the highest? ERTMS deployments in Europe. In the U.S., rail authorities have warned that they are unlikely to complete a legislated upgrade to similar technology in time for the 2015 deadline.

Video captures high-speed train crash in Spain; at least 77 killed

CCTV video captured the horrifying moment that a train derailed in Spain Wednesday, killing dozens of people and injuring scores more.

By Catherine Chomiak, Becky Bratu and Alastair Jamieson, NBC News

The driver of the train that crashed in Spain, killing at least 80 people including one American, was detained and put under formal investigation Thursday after security video showed the train derailed after speeding around a tight curve.

Excessive speed has been identified as the likely main cause of the accident, official sources told Reuters as hospitals treated some of more than 170 people who were injured, including at least five Americans.

President Barack Obama said in a statement that "the American people grieve with our Spanish friends."

Spain has declared three days of national mourning over the crash, Europe?s worst mainline rail accident for more than 25 years. The death toll has climbed to 80 and could rise further, Galicia regional officials told Reuters and AFP.

The horrific moment when the express train left the tracks on Wednesday night was captured on security video obtained by Spain?s El Pais newspaper.

Images from the scene showed bodies covered in blankets and towels lying next to toppled and crushed carriages as rescuers worked to pull survivors out of broken windows.

The driver - one of two in the cab at the time of the crash - has been put under formal investigation and was being held in custody in the hospital where he is being treated, the Supreme Court of the Galicia region said in a statement, according to Reuters.

"The judge has ordered the police to take a statement from the driver," the court said.?

El Pais cited sources close to the investigation saying the driver stated immediately after the crash that he had been traveling at 118 mph on the curve, which had a speed limit of 49 mph.

Scores are killed and injured in a train derailment in NW Spain.

Trapped in his wrecked cab, he reportedly told supervisors over the radio: "We're human! We're human," according to El Pais. "I hope there are no fatalities because they will fall on my conscience,"?he said, according to the newspaper?s source. NBC News was unable to immediately confirm the report.

A State Department official said it had been confirmed that a U.S. citizen was killed and five had been injured. "These numbers may change as we receive additional information."

Obama said he and his wife Michelle were ?shocked and saddened? by the derailment.

?On behalf of the American people, we offer our deepest sympathies and condolences to the families and loved ones of the more than 80 people who lost their lives,? he said.?

?We extend our wishes for a full recovery to those who were hurt. We also offer our heartfelt gratitude to the Government of Spain and to the rescue personnel who are working to locate the missing and treat the injured ... Today the American people grieve with our Spanish friends, who are in our thoughts and prayers.?

He added the United States was ready to provide ?any assistance we can in the difficult days ahead.?

There are reports of as many as 100 people wounded and doezens dead in a train derailment in northwestern Spain. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

All the bodies had been removed from the wreckage by Thursday morning.

Mar Linares, 42, from the Galician city of La Coruna, told Reuters that her 15-year-old son Marco, who was travelling from Madrid on the train, was in intensive care.?

"He was trapped by train wreckage but he managed to pull a hand free and that was how he was found. He says there was a lady on top of him who had been travelling with a little girl, and the lady was dead," she said at the hospital.?

Tomas Lopez, whose wife and two children were travelling on the train, told Reuters that "the worst thing is the uncertainty, I feel desperate"?as he searched for them at Santiago University Hospital.

"My daughter is OK but I don't know where my wife and son are. My wife brought them from Madrid to see museums and such... I have been looking for them all night from one place to another," he said, tears rolling down his face.?

So many local residents lined up to donate blood that officials were forced to open additional donation points.

Spain's prime minister, Mariano Rajoy, declared three days of national mourning after visiting the site.

"The scene is shocking, it's Dante-esque," the head of Spain's Galicia region, Alberto Nunez Feijoo, said Wednesday night in a radio interview, according to Reuters.

Local health officials said 95 injured people were still in the hospital Thursday, of whom 36 - including four children - were in critical condition.

The crash, which happened at 8:41 p.m. local time (2:41 p.m. ET) Wednesday, was Europe?s deadliest mainline train accident in more than 25 years and Spain's worst in four decades.

It also cast a shadow of tragedy over the entire Galicia region, which had been due to celebrate a public holiday Thursday.

Santiago de Compostela had been preparing for the festival of St. James, when thousands of Christian pilgrims from around the world pack the streets. It is likely the train was packed full with people traveling for the holiday.

Officials said all of the celebrations, including a traditional High Mass at the city?s centuries-old cathedral, were canceled.

A group of volunteers waiting to give blood to help those injured in the train accident close to Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Wednesday.

The eight-car Alvia express train was traveling from the capital, Madrid, to the city of Ferrol when it derailed about two miles short of Santiago de Compostela station, national train operator Renfe said in a statement.

Spain?s rail network is one of the most modern and successful in Europe, following decades of public investment.

Transport expert and author Christian Wolmar said it was not clear if high-tech safety systems, which override inputs by the driver, would have been in use at the time.

?On high speed lines, the European Train Control System should automatically correct the speed of the train, but this accident may have happened on a stretch of line which is not designated as high-speed,? he said.

Rail workers? union SEMAF expressed ?support for the comrade who has been implicated in this accident? as well as ?condolences? to the victims, according to RTVE.

The crash is Spain?s biggest disaster since the 2004 terror attack at Madrid?s Atocha station that left 191 dead, and its worst train crash since 1972 when a collision left 86 dead.

In November 2000, 155 people were killed when a fire in a tunnel engulfed a funicular train packed with skiers in Austria.

In Montenegro, up to 46 people were killed and nearly 200 injured in 2006 when a packed train derailed and plunged into a ravine outside the capital, Podgorica.

NBC News' Brinley Bruton and Jason Cumming and?Reuters contributed to this report.?

DreamWorks Taps Paul Greengrass for Chicago 7

UPDATE: I just started vacation but learned that Scott Rudin will produce Chicago 7.

PREVIOUS EXCLUSIVE, TUESDAY 2:40 PM: I?ve learned that DreamWorks is finally reviving a once hot project that has barely been touched since its director Steven Spielberg suspended it back in 2008. Conventional wisdom had it that this would be Spielberg?s next Oscar pic. Since then, ?every two months it?s been revisited. The title would come up in conversation at production meetings. But it?s just been hanging,? a source tells me. No longer. I?ve learned the studio is moving forward with Paul Greengrass in final talks to direct Aaron Sorkin?s script The Trial Of The Chicago 7. It?s based on the infamous 1969 federal conspiracy trial arising out of the protesters vs police violent rioting at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago that transfixed the nation because of its counter-culture and leftist mayhem intended to undermine the U.S. government.

The modestly budgeted $20M-$30M film will start production probably in January. DreamWorks is funding all development with its financial partners, and Disney will distribute. No casting is in discussion yet because the deal isn?t done for Greengrass (United 93, The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum, Green Zone). His upcoming Captain Phillips biopic starring Tom Hanks about a sea hijacking by Somali pirates has great advance buzz at Sony. Plus, as a former British journalist and filmmaker attracted to true stories, Greengrass sounds like the right director for Chicago 7 and was considered to helm it back in August 2008.

So here?s the background: On July 12, 2007, Sorkin signed a deal with DreamWorks to write three scripts, the first of which was Chicago 7. Sorkin already was developing the project with Spielberg to direct, and Walter Parkes & Laurie MacDonald to produce. Spielberg just after he finished work on Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull was so enthused he discussed it with showbiz folks and journalists every chance he got and was working every day with Sorkin on the script. After the Writers Strike November 5, 2007-February 12, 2008, the pic was given an April start date. But some feared (unnecessarily) that a Screen Actors Guild strike would begin next. Spielberg cited that as the reason he pushed back the start date again and again. Until finally the director decided to move on.

Just before then, Spielberg told Vanity Fair that ?we?re in the process right now on Chicago 7 of doing a feasibility study of what actors are available?. News had leaked that he?d approached Will Smith to play Bobby Seale. He planned to meet with Heath Ledger about the role of Tom Hayden. When VF visited Spielberg at his Amblin Entertainment office, on a side table lay ?headshots of actors under consideration. Among them Will Smith, Taye Diggs, Adam Arkin, and Kevin Spacey; Sacha Baron Cohen (as Abbie Hoffman) and Philip Seymour Hoffman (as civil liberties defense lawyer William Kunstler).? But the only actor confirmed was Baron Cohen to play Abbie Hoffman.

Related: Sacha Baron Cohen Exits Freddie Mercury Biopic Over Creative Differences With Queen

Chicago 7 was next revived later in 2008. As previously mentioned, Greengrass was a possibility as a director that August. Then Ben Stiller, whose Red Hour Films had just worked with DreamWorks on Tropic Thunder which Stiller wrote, produced, and directed. That fall, Stiller labored with Sorkin on the Chicago 7 script with the intent to helm it. ?They got together and worked hard on it. And there was even a read-through. But Sorkin and Ben didn?t crack it, the pic was going to be too expensive for DreamWorks, and Sorkin went on to The Social Network,? I?m told.

The pic, of course, is based on the 1968 Democratic National Convention when anti-war, counter-culture, Yippie, Black Panther, and other protesters battled the Chicago Police Department in what became week-long street rioting witnessed live on television by a worldwide audience. A year later the Nixon administration tried the most prominent activists on charges they conspired to incite the violence. Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, David Dellinger, Tom Hayden, Rennie Davis, John Froines, and Lee Weiner were represented by attorneys William Kunstler and Leonard Weinglass of the Center For Constitutional Rights. An 8th defendant, Bobby Seale, co-chair of the Black Panther Party, wound up infamously bound, gagged and handcuffed to his chair by presiding U.S. District Judge Julius Hoffman until his trial was severed during the proceedings. Seale was ordered to serve 5 years in prison for contempt of court.

The Chicago 7 trial lasted months and created headlines, especially with many well-known names from the American left called to testify including folk singers Phil Ochs, Judy Collins and Arlo Guthrie, writers Norman Mailer and Allen Ginsberg, and activists Timothy Leary and Jesse Jackson. On February 18, 1970, all 7 defendants were found not guilty of conspiracy. Froines and Weiner were acquitted completely, while the remaining 5 were convicted of crossing state lines with the intent to incite a riot, and sentenced to 5 years in prison. Two years later, all the convictions were reversed on appeal.

Service sector helps UK economy grow 0.6 pct in Q2

LONDON (AP) ? The British economy grew by 0.6 percent in the first quarter compared with the previous three months, largely on the back of a strong performance by the services sector.

The increase as reported by the Office for National Statistics was double the previous quarter's rate but in line with market expectations.

The quarterly performance will likely give the UK government a bit of breathing space amid ongoing criticism over its tough austerity policies. Critics say that despite the improvement in overall growth, many people in Britain are failing to see an improvement in their living standards.

The International Monetary Fund has suggested that the government might want to reconsider the pace of its austerity measures to help the economy, whose output was worth 1.4 trillion pounds ($2.1 trillion) in 2012.

Obama Kicks Off Economy Campaign, Blasts GOP

GALESBURG, Ill. ? Seeking to force the public debate back to the economy, President Obama today slammed Republicans for standing in the way of his efforts to boost the middle class, as he launched a campaign to highlight his second-term priorities.

?With an endless parade of distractions, political posturing and phony scandals, Washington has taken its eye off the ball. And I am here to say this needs to stop,? the president said in a lengthy, high-profile speech at Knox College, the site of his first economic address on the national stage in 2005.

?Short-term thinking and stale debates are not what this moment requires. Our focus must be on the basic economic issues that the matter most to you ? the people we represent. And as Washington prepares to enter another budget debate, the stakes for our middle class could not be higher,? he said.

With a fresh round of federal deficit and debt ceiling negotiations looming, the president outlined his economic vision and vowed to help the middle class going forward, declaring his ?highest priority? to be the fight against economic inequality.

?This growing inequality isn?t just morally wrong; it?s bad economics,? he said. ?That?s why reversing these trends must be Washington?s highest priority.?

?Unfortunately, over the past couple of years in particular, Washington hasn?t just ignored the problem; too often, it?s made things worse,? he said. ?Over the last six months, this gridlock has gotten worse.?

The president took credit for the economy?s comeback and touted the steps his administration has taken, including tax reforms, investments in new technology and the auto industry bailout.

?Five years after the start of that Great Recession, America has fought its way back,? he said to applause. ?But I?m here today to tell you what you already know ? we?re not there yet? We have more work to do.?

?The key is to break through the tendency in Washington to bounce from crisis to crisis. What we need isn?t a three-month plan, or even a three-year plan, but a long-term American strategy, based on steady, persistent effort, to reverse the forces that have conspired against the middle class for decades,? he said.

The president did not outline any new initiatives, however. Instead, he largely restated his previous proposals and said he would ?engage the American people in this debate? through a series of speeches in the next several weeks.

?I will lay out my ideas for how we build on the cornerstones of what it means to be middle class in America, and what it takes to work your way into the middle class in America,? he said. ?Some of these ideas I?ve talked about before, and some will be new. Some will require Congress, and some I will pursue on my own. Some will benefit folks right away; some will take years to fully implement.?

?It may seem hard today, but if we are willing to take a few bold steps ? if Washington will just shake off its complacency and set aside the kind of slash-and-burn partisanship we?ve seen these past few years ? our economy will be stronger a year from now,? he said.

The president urged Republicans to set politics aside and work to find common ground. ?There are Republicans in Congress right now who privately agree with me on many of the ideas I?ll be proposing, but worry they?ll face swift political retaliation for saying so. Others will dismiss every idea I put forward either because they?re playing to their most strident supporters,? he said. ?In either case, I say to these members of Congress: I am laying out my ideas to give the middle class a better shot. Now it?s time for you to lay out yours.?

Republicans aren?t buying it and have criticized the president?s latest ?pivot? back to the economy.

Speaking on the House floor earlier today, Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, likened the president?s speech to ?a hollow shell.?

?It?s an Easter egg with no candy in it,? he said. ?Americans aren?t asking the question ?where are the speeches?? ? they?re asking ?where are the jobs???

Waldschattenspiel
'Today we look at something very special. It?s a German family game called ?Waldschattenspiel?, sold here as ?Shadows In The Woods?. It?s a game designed for children and an adult, but I think any group would happily play this wonderful little thing. There is nothing else like it, and certainly nothing else that looks like it. Let me explain how the game plays. A board. Wooden trees of different sizes. Little wooden pawns. A candle. The child player takes one of the little wooden pawns (the dwarves) and hides it in the forest, in a patch of shadow. Once all the children have hidden their dwarves. The adult player, a giant with a bright lantern represented by a tea-light, rolls a die and moves that many paces through the trees. As the light source moves, the shadows dance and stretch. Any dwarf caught in the light is frozen, unable to move, until another dwarf can come to touch it and break the spell. The dwarves win the game by coming together in the same patch of shadow, under the same tree. The light-bringer wins if it freezes all the dwarves.'

I saw this at a Toys R Us when it first came out a couple years ago, along with its Egyptian pyramid/mummy themed counterpart, Treasure of the Lost Pyramid, and it took all of my willpower to not just buy them both right then and there. But they were both about $25 and I couldn't really justify the purchase at the time. Well, fast forward to last week when I was bored and stopped into a Barnes & Noble in California... I had totally spaced the whole "Barnes & Noble game dumping sale" that happens every year around this time and so it was a pleasant surprise to see several copies of Haunted Ruins sitting there for 75% off. It was also kind of sad to see that, because really, this is a great game and a great production that deserves to be in the homes of many kids who will surely love it.'

Clue Premiere Edition
'After a steady decline after the video game boom, board games are regaining popularity, but only because the companies behind them are innovating. One such way is by upgrading from 2-Dimensional boards to 3D, pop-up ones. The Clue Premier Edition, retailing at $150, has a game board that is literally like a doll house. The board has nine sunken 3D rooms, each with detailed furnishing. The only thing that differentiates it from a doll house is that it has a non-removable, tempered glass lid placed on top, preventing tampering inside.'

3D Labyrinth
'Part of the Ravensburger Labyrinth Games series, This is a super-simplified version of The aMAZEing Labyrinth for the really younger set. Instead of the shifting tiles of the other versions, in this game, entire sections of the maze shift, as the modular 3-D board has a sliding center piece, which allows for different pathways through the maze. Players attempt to reach the items shown on their treasure cards by shifting the maze and moving through the corridors.'

Fireball Island Re-creation
'Here it is folks, the newly finished Fireball Island! What a trip it's been. What's been keeping me going is a guy out in CA who is going to be the proud owner of this piece. He's very worried about the shipment being damaged but I'm very confident in the strength of the object as well as my packing skills. Alain, the new owner, has really kept me interested in the project with his enthusiasm and excitement. We are both really into this whole thing and hope more comes from it. We talked the other night about Torpedo Run!, a very awesome game that puts Battleship to shame. I might be looking into recreating that game in the future, we'll have to see. But at the very least I am confident that I can make more Fireball Islands, and am taking offers to anyone who is interested in one. So check out the pics and stay on the look out for more boards to come.'

Caverns of the Dead
'Sometimes I'll see an interesting game at a convention, but it can be hard to get a good photo when excited players are pressing around the table... and I'm hesitant to interrupt their fun. I dodged to the other end of the table to get a better shot... (not so good...) ...and finally, a somewhat fuzzy zoom shot. It looks to be a portable gaming table, built around several box bottoms.'

Cranium Balloon Lagoon
'Spin the musical merry-go-round and start the timer, then race around the board trying to complete 4 fun-filled carnival games before the music ends. The 4 games utilize the same skills needed in the traditional Cranium categories: Word Worm, Star Performer, Data Head, and Creative Cat. Only this time, you're playing carnival games! In Letter Lake, you'll fish for letters to spell a word. In Frog Pong, you must hop the frogs from the lily pads back into their pond. In Snack Hut, try to collect 4 matching snacks, and in Tumble Tides, spin the picture wheels and try to match all 4 sections of the picture. It's based on the original Cranium game, but given a fun carnival twist that kids will love! Collect balloons as you play the 4 carnival games, and the first player to collect 15 balloons, wins.'

Armored troopers of the US ?Lucky Seventh? hurtle through underground bunkers and combat the monstrous forces of the German SWD in a furious race against time. The Doomsday Device is ticking and neither the Allies nor the Axis can fail. The mechanics for this two player game are simple to grasp allowing players to instantly focus on their tactical options. Play is incredibly fast-paced and tense and players choose their forces through a card-based Requisition Point system. The game may either be played with chipboard stand-ups that are included in the box or with highly detailed metal miniatures that are available from this site. Miniatures are NOT required to play this game but they are really cool!'

The Lost World Jurassic Park Game
'Based on the second movie, of course. This tri-lingual (English, Spanish, French) crowded MB box contains a whole bunch of thin cardboard 3D buildings; stand up cardboard pieces for the 12 humans and the helicopter, and a bunch of plastic miniatures of the dinosaurs (a T-Rex and some Velociraptors). This is played in teams, the human team trying to get 3 humans off the board via the chopper, and the dinosaur team trying to prevent this. When 3 play, the third player alternates teams. The humans can jump between building roofs or can run between them. Unfortunately, the dinosaurs move a lot faster on the ground than the humans (the humans move between marked spaces, the dinosaurs between zones). Buildings have several entry/exit points for the humans but only one for the raptors. Dice indicate how to move humans and dinosaurs; one of the dice has Stop/Go markings which control whether you may roll again or not -- making movement harder to predict. Jumping (for humans) and entering buildings (for dinosaurs) is also dice controlled. The T-Rex is confined to a single board edge area; its function is to flush the humans from the starting building -- once he reaches it, all remaining humans are devoured! Yes, unlike the first movie game, in this one there is death aplenty.'

Heroscape
'Heroscape is turn-based miniature wargaming system played using miniature figures on a board made from interlocking hexagonal tiles that allow for construction of a large variety of 3D playing boards. It is a game of hit points, numerous dice, and attacking. It plays like a fantastic version of chess. Only instead of rooks and pawns, you have all manner of orcs, dragons, robots, assassins, etc. The board and character selection is vast if the host has enough expansion packs, and this was certainly the case over the weekend. The three playing boards sprawled out in full 3d upon a long banquet table and were surrounded by plastic containers full of various character pieces. The five other people playing for the most part knew the characters? stats without looking at the cards. It was a little intimidating, so I picked a pre-configured, defensive style army. After six hours of 45 minute long games, I had won two and lost the rest.'

Scream Inn
'Bet you never knew there was a Scream Inn board game?! Well, neither did I? Released in the 1970s by Fisher Price, it's currently on eBay for about ?70 or thereabouts. Below I've snagged a few photos to give you an idea of the look and feel of the game. A standard board game with some cut-outs to give a 3d effect and a internal turntable for I presume turning various bits and bobs around? Comes with markers both of the ghost and human variety plus a die and rule book. Strange that no obvious characters from the strip appear aside from a generic ghost. Maybe the comic gave rights only to use the name of the strip. Still, a slice of forgotten comics history which probably went unnoticed by fans back in the day.'

Mordheim: City of the Damned
'Mordheim does to Warhammer Fantasy what Necromunda does to Warhammer 40k. The game mechanics work in classic Games Workshop fashion. Instead of playing with hundreds of miniatures, you pick a warband of 1-20 models(Most average at 10-12 or so), and fight a skirmish with other warbands. If you play well, your warband gains money, levels, size, and new powers, but play badly and your warband slowly deteriorates as people die or otherwise get dismembered. Games actually play very similar to Necromunda but due to the fantasy setting you should see fewer long distance shots, and a lot more hand to hand fighting.'

p.s. Hey. Kind of quiet around here. ** David Ehrenstein, Hm, Cindy Sherman comparison, interesting. I need to think about that. I'm kind of curious about Shirley Jones' memoir for reasons that must be obvious to you and that, if obvious, I would ask you to keep between you and me, please, but I can't imagine actually sitting down and reading such a thing. Do they still release those 'Cliff Notes' books? ** S., Hey. I associate feeling/emotion with words because the two are such sworn enemies and because I like being confused to a certain degree. De-jading yourself is important, I think. Jadedness will age you faster than cigarettes. Art's a decent savior, I think, I hope. I'm okay. It rained yesterday. That was ultimately good. ** Mononoke Paradice, Oh, that's okay about the Day delay, no problem, gosh, just thank you! Which Robbe-Grillet do you want to read? Or should I wait and let the post fill me in and surprise me. That sounds fun. Yeah, the comments arena was a little echoey yesterday. Strange. It's hard to know what niceness is, which I guess is why I'm finding it interesting to write about. I do think you're nice. I guess it's like an instinctual reaction and opinion or something. Pieter Saenredam! Thank you! John Ashbery really loves his paintings, and I can see why. ** Heliotrope, Hi, Mark! Thanks about the posts. Me kind of too about the questionable translation offered to my thoughts by my mouth. No, I did think about going to watch the TdF finale, but it was murderously hot, and that plus the crowds made me do otherwise. I saw a bit on TV. Wow, really cool about finding those letters. That's amazing. My heart went boom. I don't think I had any experiences re: The Brotherhood of Eternal Love, that I can remember anyway. It feels very vague when I think about it. I remember Sound Spectrum, of course. I'm getting a creeped out yet unillustrated memory when I think of that place. Dude, ouch, about the re-torn thing. Get better as close to this instant as possible. Andy Prieboy! I've met a couple of French people who are big fans of his. I'm not sure if he's one of the anointed American cult figures beloved by the French or whether encountering two French fans of his was pure coincidence. And Tony Kinman! Great bass player, yeah, and his voice is awesome too. The heat has broken, at least at the current, still early hour, and that is a fine thing. I love you guys so too! ** Sypha, Hi. Hm, maybe a scene where a guy has his back moles shaved by a doctor he's attracted to would make a good novel moment. Not in my current novel, but in something. Thanks for reading 'The Dream Police'. The Flintstones one ... oh, right. That one. I remember that. I wrote that for my friend Ziggy who was the model for Ziggy in 'Try'. Anyway, thanks, man. ** _Black_Acrylic, I'm so glad you thought it was okay, Ben! Thank you again so much! ** Grant Scicluna, Oh, rubbing it in, nice. I don't think I yell, or maybe once every few years, but that comment almost turned my typing's volume up a notch. Nah, kidding. Our heat broke, for now, so I'm cool. Internally, and kind of vaguely externally. That's interesting about the dilemma of the script or of your script. So, there really is a formula to such things that you have to stick to and finesse and try to subvert? Tough form. Or for me it would be. I can't do formulas. When I try, the writing just gets very artificial. Yeah, sounds tricky. Great about the readers report! The funding bodies, scary seeming. I guess you've probably sussed how to do that. Oh, as far as how the early stages of my novels look, it really depends on the strategy I have for the novel, and I try to take a different strategy with each one to keep myself challenged and pushing myself. A lot of the time, the novel-in-early-progress only looks like a novel the way a cloudy night sky looks like a starry sky. With this one right now, let's see... There's a notebook full of handwritten stuff that I started with. It contains ideas, formal graphs, some random sentences and paragraphs of prose, etc. There's the first chapter of what was going to be the George Miles novel, which I'm still considering keeping as the first chapter with changes. And, in any case, which I'm using a template for the new novel's form because there was something I liked going on there. Thus far, I'm writing the novel in a doc rather than by hand -- I normally write by hand -- because I wrote 'The Marbled Swarm' by typing in a doc, and it was interesting enough that I want to continue that experiment. What's in the doc is messy. A few scenes I'm working on. Some very personal self-examining stuff that might or might not stay. To see what I'm writing wouldn't make much sense yet. I leave lots and lots of gaps that I will fill in later because I can't write in a linear way. So, I guess that's a general picture of what exists right now. The heat went down last night. That isn't supposed to last, so I'm going to try to run as many errands that require metro rides early on today as I can. Best to you, and stay chilly in the good way. ** Steevee, See, I was just saying to James how the 'hot' dermatologist thing could be a good fictional conceit, and your story is proof positive. ** Misanthrope, You guys are pushing it with the Shirley talk. Cease and desist. Tim Law, that's him. I was brain dead yesterday, and my fingers proved it. Well, that's one way to think about escorting. Ugh, sorry, about your niece's mom's shit. Ugh. Your niece deserves so, so much better. As do you, of course. ** Rewritedept, Well, I would certainly hope you're enjoying 'Alien Lanes'. Otherwise, I would think you were clinically something bad. 'Do the Collapse': their big produced record. A record of controversy for that reason amongst the Pollard diehards. I like it a bunch. Not my favorite of theirs, but there are a lot of great, great songs on it as well as perhaps the only crappy song Pollard has ever written, a song which he has subsequently apologized for. 'Love It to Death' is maybe the best Alice Cooper album, yeah. But 'Killer' gives it at least a run for its money. I'll get the True Widow. Haven't yet. Thanks for giving the definitive on the candy. Thought something like that might be the case. Shows? The Paris Pitchfork Festival is coming up. I'll definitely see a day or two of that: Deerhunter, Iceage, Baths, Deafheaven, No Age, The Haxan Cloak, ... The novel is taking more shape, yes. I did work on it yesterday, yeah. My day was okay, weird, but okay. Thanks, pal, and later, gator. ** That's it. 3D boards games are on your blog plate today due to a short but intense spate of interest on my part in them the other day. See you tomorrow.
