Obama visits Oklahoma town digging out after tornado

By Jeff Mason

MOORE, Oklahoma (Reuters) - President Barack Obama arrived in Moore, Oklahoma, on Sunday to tour the town that was hammered last week by a powerful tornado that killed 24 people and assure its residents that the federal government would provide long-term help.

His first stop was Plaza Towers Elementary School, where seven children died and several students and teachers were injured by the May 20 afternoon storm.

Piles of boards, brick and cinder blocks that used to be buildings and houses lined the side of the street. Rare items that survived the disaster - a television set, a pink baby carriage - stood in contrast to the wreckage.

Cars with their bodies dented and windows smashed lay under debris or twisted on their sides. Rising above the wasteland were at least three American flags that had been attached to the rubble, waving in the wind.

"The president's message is that support is not winding down," White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters on Air Force One. "As demonstrated by our efforts in Tuscaloosa, in Joplin, and those communities in Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey that were affected by Sandy, we'll be standing with the people of these resilient communities as they come back stronger than ever."

Obama has been repeatedly called on in recent months to comfort shaken U.S. communities, from a visit last month to Boston in the wake of the marathon bombings, to Newtown, Connecticut, the site of a December mass school shooting.

Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and Joplin, Missouri, were hard-hit by tornadoes two years ago.

The Moore tornado, which rated the most powerful on the five-step scale used to measure the destructive power of twisters, ripped a 17-mile (27-km) long corridor of destruction through the suburb of Oklahoma City, flattening entire blocks of homes, two schools and a hospital in some 50 minutes on May 20.

It was the most powerful of a spate of 76 twisters that touched down in 10 states from May 18 through 20, causing an estimated $2 billion to $5 billion in insured losses, according to disaster modeling company Eqecat.

Some 377 people were injured by the Moore tornado, the deadliest such windstorm to hit the United States in two years.

Forex Trading In Islamic Finance | ICM

Since receiving as well as paying of interest is Haram in Islam, Muslims therefore require a special kind of forex trading account. Conventional forex accounts charge (or pay) interest to the account holder, determined by rollover positions held over the weekend ? on a currency pair that has a positive/negative interest rate differential between the currencies. Islamic Forex Accounts negates the interest costs receivable (or payable), and in fact can still function as effectively as any other conventional forex accounts. It is important for a Muslim trader to partner with the right broker in order to make your investments as shariah compliant as possible. Below, we discuss some of the issues surrounding forex trading within the Islamic Finance domain:

The Trading of Currency with Currency

Fursa FX recognizes that only spot forex trading is considered halal as the transaction is done on a spot basis, meaning both price and delivery of the asset are settled at the same moment in time. Currently, we refrain from trading in currency options, swaps, futures, forwards and other derivative contracts as the conditions for which trading of these instruments are permissible depends on a case to case basis (for example, Islamic Scholars and Experts have claimed that swaps are not allowed in the manner they are practiced in the commodity exchange, defined under the AAOIFI Syariah Standard, hlm 358). However, buying and selling of currencies is permissible and is termed Bai Sarf in Islamic banking, and Muslims are allowed to exchange Silver with Gold, buy Gold with US dollars and buy US dollars by selling Euro. The mechanics of Bai Sarf is halal but it has to be done on the spot. We do our best to ensure that all the transactions that we provide or conduct are according to the principles of Halal, or Islamic permissibility.
Leveraged Investments

Current Islamic banking & finance practices do not completely rule out the use of leverage in investments. If we consider the example of Islamic REITs (Real Estate Investment Trusts) in Malaysia, these instruments operate at a maximum leverage of 33 %. Debt ratio below or equal to this level is deemed acceptable by governing authorities in Malaysia. (Muhammad Ayub, 2007 and Jawad Ali, 2007). In addition, Fursa FX does not invest in anywhere that has high excessive leverage of 1:500, as this would promote excessive speculation and incur unnecessary risk for the investor. Our manual trading accounts are thus limited to a 1:100 leverage configuration.

It is worth to note that, at the end of the day, traders should take personal responsibility and not to over-leverage and be exposed to unnecessary risk.

Haram vs Halal

Religion is a personal relationship between self and God and each is responsible for his own choices and decisions. Islamic finance is always evolving and that there are risks and dangers of being trapped in the Im right and youre wrong mentality. Even among the various recognized Shariaah scholars, their opinions may differ in many aspects of Islamic finance, including the topic of forex trading. The beauty of Islam is that it has many different points of view and dynamism, so that we can learn from each other for everyones benefit. Diversity is our strength and that Islam is meant to be suitable for everyone in this world. The most important thing is to respect others beliefs and not to miss out on the bigger purpose and objective of the laws to benefit the community and provide an ethical and fair trade for all. Fursa FX does not claim to be the ultimate authority on the permissibility on Islamic Forex trading, but we strive to provide the best Shariah-compliant trading platform possible and we are always on the lookout to improve and keep up to date with the latest developments.

Sen. Paul questions drone use, says scandals hurt Obama's 'moral authority'

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., said on "This Week" that the recent controversies engulfing the White House over the IRS, reporter leak investigations, and Benghazi have threatened President Obama's "moral authority to lead the nation," while he continued to question the administration's use of drone strikes against terrorist targets overseas.

"I think the constellation of these three scandals ongoing, really takes away from the president's moral authority to lead the nation," Paul said this morning on "This Week." "Nobody questions his legal authority, but I think he's really losing the moral authority to lead this nation. And he really needs to put a stop to this. I don't care whether you're a Republican or a Democrat, nobody likes to see the opposite party punishing you for your political beliefs, using the power of government to do so."

While he has called for a special counsel to investigate the IRS scandal, in which the IRS gave increased scrutiny to conservative groups applying for non-profit status, Paul would not say whether he believed any crimes were committed.

"I don't think we know so far. The main woman from the IRS that's involved has taken the Fifth Amendment. She's no longer cooperating," Paul said of Lois Lerner, the IRS official who refused to testify at a House committee hearing on Wednesday, and was put on leave from her position Thursday. "I think there needs to be a speedy resolution to this? If he goes beyond 30 days and if no one is fired over this? I really think it's going to be trouble for him trying to lead in the next four years."

And while Paul said he was "pleased with" the words of President Obama's major national security speech last week, he continued to question the administration's use of drone strikes and whether proper due process is occurring before military action against terrorist targets.

"I was pleased with his words, and I was pleased with the - that he did respond to this," Paul said in reaction to President Obama's speech Thursday at the National Defense University. "However, there still is a question in my mind of what he thinks due process is. You know, due process to most of us is a court of law, it's a trial by a jury. And right now their process is him looking at some flashcards and a PowerPoint presentation on 'Terror Tuesdays' in the White House. For a lot of us, that's not really due process."

When asked whether a drone strike should have been used against Al Qaeda leader and American citizen Anwar al-Awlaki, who was killed by a drone strike in Yemen in 2011, Paul reiterated his belief that the U.S. should attempt to try individuals for treason, with a judge reviewing evidence before military strikes.

"If you are conspiring to attack America and you are a traitor, I would try you for treason," Paul said. "If you don't come home for the trial, I would try you in absentia. And then the death penalty has been used repeatedly throughout our history for treason, but a judge looks at evidence. And that's something that separates us from the rest of the world, is that we adjudicate things by taking it to an independent body who's not politically motivated, or elected."

Paul, who led a 13-hour Senate filibuster on the administration's use of drone strikes in March, also questioned whether President Obama was truly protecting civil liberties by promising not to carry out certain actions such as detaining citizens indefinitely - while still retaining the power to do so under the law.

"It's not good enough to us that he's not using a power," Paul said. "We want him to assert that he won't, that he doesn't have the power."

Paul said he did not back closing the detainee prison at Guantanamo Bay, which President Obama called for again last week, but Paul said the prison has "become a symbol of something though, and I think things should change."

"I think the people being held there are bad people," Paul said. "What I would do though is I would accuse them, charge them, and try them in military commissions, or trials, or tribunals. And I think that would go a long way toward showing the world that we're not going to hold them without charge forever."

Report: Yahoo becomes the latest company to place a bid on Hulu

Report Yahoo becomes the latest company to place a bid on Hulu

The rumors on the potential sale of Hulu started circulating again a couple of months back. Now, according to AllThingsD, Yahoo is joining other big-name companies (such as Time Warner Cable and DirecTV) in the race to try and acquire the streaming service. Per the always-insightful sources "familiar with the process," Marissa Mayer & Co. submitted a bid for Hulu just this morning, though there are no details on how much the company is willing to spend on the video site. Something tells us we'll know more soon enough, but we can say with confidence that Yahoo is starting its holiday shopping really early.

How to Appeal to Canadian Homebuyers - RealEstate.com

If you live in California, Texas, Arizona or Florida and are planning to put your home on the market, there is a whole group of potential buyers to consider: Canadians! Yes, your friendly northern neighbors (sometimes referred to as ?snowbirds?) are looking for second homes south of the border. If you are selling a property that has it all, then you do not want to ignore these buyers. Here are four tips to help your property appeal to Canadian homebuyers.

What Canadians Want

Canadian homebuyers are quickly buying up U.S. real estateSimply put, Canadians are looking for reasonably priced homes in warm climates. Popular destinations include those mentioned above, with Florida being the most popular of all.

The Canadian dollar is strong right now, and Canadian investors are looking to take advantage of current low housing prices in the United States. Most are looking for an investment property ? something that will increase in value in the long term.

However, because of U.S. property tax implications, and because many are planning to keep their homes in Canada as well, we?re not talking about luxury home investors. Most are looking for a home priced in the $300,000 to $500,000 range.

Because these properties are long-term investments, Canadian homebuyers are looking for a place to retire that is easy to maintain and conveniently located close to services. Ideally, the property shouldn?t be too large, and ground-floor bedrooms are highly desirable.

Finally, because Canadians can only stay 182 consecutive days in the U.S. without a visa, they search for properties that will be easy to rent out for long stretches of the year.

Prepare to Wow Canadian Investors

To appeal to this potentially lucrative market, there are a few things to keep in mind when preparing and listing your home for sale.

Carefully examine your location

Examine your location and be perfectly honest: Will your home?s setting appeal to a Canadian looking for a vacation home?

Accessibility is key, and if you?re too far from an international airport, your home may not be right for a foreign buyer.

Evaluate your home?s appeal based on its proximity to services such as hospitals, shops, tourist destinations, leisure activities, etc. When it comes to Canadian homebuyers, the old adage is true: location, location, location!

Set the right price

Canadians are looking to invest and will not overpay for a property. Consider asking a real estate agent to do a ?comparative market analysis? of your home.

In any home sale, correct pricing is key. If you overvalue or overprice your property, you can be sure Canadian buyers will look elsewhere for their dream home.

Write an excellent listing description

Once you?ve evaluated your property and set your price, it?s time to prepare a thoroughly detailed listing.

Clearly describe any home features that will appeal to foreign buyers. Few will want to buy a home without seeing it, but they won?t even schedule a visit if they don?t get enough information from the listing.

Provide as much detail as you can about each room, the climate control system, the water system, latest upgrades and the last time things were updated (e.g., the last time you had the roof redone).

Be prepared to provide copies of bills and receipts for all work done and appliance upgrades. Transparency is the best policy: If one bathroom needs an upgrade, say so! Your honesty will make an impression.

Be visible online

Most Canadians will begin their U.S. home search online. List on websites and with Canadian agencies that specialize in helping Canadians find homes in the U.S.

Social media is another great way to give your listing visibility to Canadian buyers. Advertise your listing on Twitter, Facebook and any other social media platform you use. Choose appropriate keywords from your listing and ?hashtag? them for more exposure. You can even consider creating a blog or website for your home sale, and use keywords to show up in search results.

If your home is in the right location, you can bet your listing will attract attention from Canadian snowbirds. Make it easy for them to fall in love with your home by showcasing its features and being highly visible online.

Report: Surging Toyota tops BMW to regain best global automotive ...

A new report has found that when it comes to global car brands, Toyota now tops them all. ?

The study, released by Global BrandZ, found that with the rebound in car sales following the long recession, Toyota reclaimed its title from BMW as the top-raking automotive brand in the world. ??

The BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands report, which is based on data collected from the research company, Millward Brown, indicates that a slowdown in Europe impacted BMW?s earnings and was partially responsible for the change in the rankings.

Drawn from interviews with more than 1 million consumers and an analysis of each company?s business performance, the BrandZ study also suggests that Toyota?s increase in the rankings was likely attributed to the automaker addressing the quality issues following a rash of huge recalls in 2010.

The report, which also considers product sales in assessing the value of a company, also indicated that while car sales improved in some regions, they still remained lower than pre-recession levels.? ?

In the U.S., where year-on-year sales increased to 14.5 million cars, Ford was the country?s best-selling brand with US sales of 2.1 million cars.

General Motor?s Chevrolet brand came in second, selling 1.9 million cars. Volkswagen posted a 35 percent increase in sales, its third consecutive year of double-digit US unit growth.

Volkswagen?s Audi brand experienced its best year ever in the US, with sales growth of 19 percent, according to the report. Toyota?s U.S. sales climbed 26 percent and Honda?s 24 percent. Chrysler?s sales improved 39 percent. Korea?s Hyundai brand sold over 700,000 cars in the US.

The Global Z report states that an improvement and quality and more technology features like remote start was a driving factor with new vehicle purchases.

Heat, Pacers say Game 2 should be even better

MIAMI (AP) ? Losing a game at the final buzzer, no less than a playoff game on the road against the reigning NBA champion Miami Heat, would seem to have potential to demoralize the Indiana Pacers.

Or not.

"Our belief," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said Thursday, "has strengthened."

Barely 12 hours after LeBron James scored on a drive as time expired in overtime to give the Heat a win in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals, the Pacers were more steeled than shaken when they arrived for practice at the arena where it all went awry in the series opener. The second-guessing of Vogel's decision to keep Roy Hibbert on the bench for the final play was still going strong, but the Pacers insisted that they're mentally fine.

A short memory would likely help Indiana now, especially with Game 2 of the series back in Miami on Friday night.

"Very encouraged," Vogel said. "Our belief in our ability to beat this team has strengthened after Game 1. Our familiarity in the playoffs, in the playoff series grows with each day, grows with each game, and there's a lot of things we can definitely do better."

And on that point, the Pacers and Heat are in total agreement.

For as intense and down-to-the-wire as Game 1 was, with 35 ties or lead changes over 53 scintillating minutes where neither team ever held more than a seven-point lead, both the Pacers and Heat are expecting Friday to simply be better.

Matching the level of drama may be difficult, but the actual level of play, they think, will improve. It's easy to see how that could be the case, after a series-opener where both teams were turnover-happy ? 20 for Indiana, 21 for Miami, hardly the norm for either side ? and play was at times choppy thanks in part to 58 personal fouls being called.

"We're going to play a lot better," Heat center Chris Bosh said after film and on-court work Thursday. "We've come to expect that of ourselves. We know that yesterday wasn't the championship effort that we need in order to win the series, let alone win the finals. We're going to have to do a much better job on defense and on offense to take care of the basketball, do a better job on the boards, do a better job of containing some of their actions."

For all the sensational statistical story lines that were born from Game 1 ? James' 30-point, 10-rebound, 10-assist effort, Chris Andersen making all seven of his shots, David West and Hibbert combining for 20 field goals ? the boxscore alone points to plenty of areas where things could get better for both sides on Friday night.

In Miami's case, key reserves Ray Allen, Shane Battier and Norris Cole combined to shoot 2 for 16. In Indiana's case, George ? who finished with 27 points ? only had two at halftime, and Lance Stephenson shot just 2 for 10.

"We can get better," James said. "I think both teams didn't play to the level that they're capable of playing at in Game 1. But both teams had a chance to win."

The Heat usually have more than a chance to win. They're now 46-3 in their last 49 games, and 28-0 when Andersen grabs at least four rebounds. Still, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra was pleading for more.

"We have to push to get to another level," Spoelstra said. "It was a very competitive game. Both teams were laying it all out there but we're trying to push to another level that we think we can get to ? and we'll need to in this series.

"We have to continue to push forward and evolve. ... We have to play better in this series. In order to be able to win this series, we have to get to another level," Spoelstra said.

Another lineup ? not another level ? might have done wonders for the Pacers at the end of Game 1.

Vogel's decision to not have a 7-foot-2 shot-blocking machine like Hibbert in the game for the final play was still creating plenty of buzz on Thursday, though the second-guessing seemed to not be raining on Indiana's collective mood.

With Miami down by one, James took an inbounds pass from Shane Battier with 2.2 seconds left, drove past an overcommitted George and easily dropped a left-handed layup home as time expired. If Hibbert was in the game, odds are he would have been able to at least contest James at the rim. Without Hibbert, no one so much as seemed to even jump toward the final shot.

"I may have been able to get a hand on it," Hibbert said. "I may not have. He may have done something differently. Can't really think about that. You just have to move on."

When James scored, West turned and raised his arms a bit in clear disbelief. On Thursday, the Pacers' leader spoke about it all with a calm tone.

"I mean, hindsight is always 20-20," West said. "We know he wants to be out there on the floor. Looking back at it, probably should have been on the floor. Again, we still had the chance to make the play."

What's done is done, and Vogel said the second-guessing didn't bother him whatsoever. He's already moved on, and with good reason. The Pacers lost Game 1 of a second-round series in Miami last season, then took Game 2 and swiping home-court advantage away.

And he knows a Pacer win on Friday would change the complexion of this matchup as well.

"I don't think you can say you're the better team when that team has done what they've done," Vogel said. "But I believe we can beat them."

NOTES: Miami starting point guard Mario Chalmers said he's still dealing with a bruised left shoulder but expects to play in Game 2. Chalmers left in the third quarter on Wednesday after running into a hard screen set by Hibbert, though Spoelstra said he could have returned to the lineup if necessary. ... James headlined the All-NBA first team, collecting each of a possible 119 votes. George and Miami's Dwyane Wade were both on the third team.

Oklahoma gets far more than its share of disasters

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Many states get hit frequently with tornadoes and other natural catastrophes, but Oklahoma is Disaster Central.

The twister that devastated Moore, Okla., was the 74th presidential disaster declared in the Sooner state in the past 60 years. Only much-larger and more-populous California and Texas have had more.

The state is No. 1 in tornado disasters and No. 3 for flooding, according to a database of presidential disaster declarations handled by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. And those figures don't include drought, which is handled by a different agency.

The explanation is partly atmospheric conditions that trigger twisters and flooding, partly where people live and how they build their homes, and partly politics and bureaucratic skill, according to disaster experts. Even one of the state's U.S. senators said recently that because of the way federal guidelines are written, Oklahoma is getting disaster aid more often than it needs.

Of the 25 U.S. counties that have been declared disasters the most times since 1953, nine are in Oklahoma, the highest total of any state.

Oklahoma County has been on the disaster list 38 times, more than the entire state of New Jersey. Caddo County, just west of the Oklahoma City metro area, has been named a federal disaster area nine times since 2007, with a litany of woe that includes twisters, floods, ice storms, a blizzard and violent winds.

"Things happen around here," Tulsa, Okla.-based disaster consultant Ann Patton said. "Of course, sometimes it can make you stronger."

When disaster declarations are measured on a per-person basis, Oklahoma gets nearly three times the national average. When they are computed based on how much land is in a state, it gets twice the national average, according to an analysis of FEMA records.

The atmospheric explanation is pretty basic: "Oklahoma really is the bull's-eye for awful tornadoes," said Mike Lindell, director of the Hazard Reduction and Recovery Center at Texas A&M University.

Oklahoma is in a particularly busy and dangerous section of Tornado Alley, the cluster of states in the nation's midsection that are especially twister-prone.

If you map all the nation's tornadoes in May ? the busiest tornado month ? they form a circular blob 100 miles across over central Oklahoma. That's because low-pressure systems rush south down the Rocky Mountains and collide with warm, moist air, forming nasty thunderstorms that often spawn tornadoes, said Harold Brooks, a research meteorologist at the Severe Storms Laboratory in Norman, Okla.

"Welcome to the sweet spot of severe thunderstorms," Brooks said.

Texas, Kansas and Florida get more tornadoes than Oklahoma does, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. But Oklahoma gets more of the biggest ones ? the EF5s, like the one that smashed Moore. That's why the storm lab and the National Weather Service storm prediction center are in Oklahoma, Lindell said.

With severe thunderstorms, you can get both tornadoes and flooding. Oklahoma has been declared a disaster 35 times because of tornadoes and 44 times because of flooding. In some instances, a combination tornado-and-flood disaster was declared.

The FEMA database looks only at how often catastrophes are declared and aid is shipped, not how much total money is given out.

Tornadoes generally occur more frequently than hurricanes and earthquakes but usually don't cause as much damage. Oklahoma City officials estimate the Moore tornado caused up to $2 billion in damage, while state officials say it may exceed the figures for the 2011 Joplin, Mo., tornado. At $2.8 billion, Joplin has been the nation's costliest tornado since 1950, according to NOAA's Storm Prediction Center.

Yet NOAA's National Hurricane Center lists more than 30 hurricanes that caused more than $2.8 billion damage when adjusted for inflation. Hurricanes tend to hit broader areas, last longer and strike the more densely populated coast, where property values are higher.

Another explanation for Oklahoma's role as Disaster Central is urban sprawl, which puts more people in the path of disasters. Moore, with 56,000 people, boomed by more than one-third between 2000 and 2010. As more such suburbs pop up and grow, the chances of homes being hit increases.

Between 1970 and 1985, Tulsa County was declared a flood disaster about nine times, said Patton, the disaster consultant. Then the city moved more than 1,000 buildings out of harm's way and diverted water. There hasn't been major flooding since, she said.

Oklahoma is the leading state when it comes to safe rooms, which probably saved lives in Moore, according to FEMA. Yet some areas haven't developed wisely to avoid disasters and "don't respect the power of nature," Patton said.

Several disaster experts also say Oklahoma is particularly adept at working the bureaucracy to obtain federal aid.

Having the president declare your community a federal disaster area is a complicated process that needs to be followed precisely. A governor must request a presidential declaration in writing through FEMA, which rates the disaster based on a number of factors. It is up to the president to make the decision, and then it's up to FEMA to get the aid flowing.

The presidential decision involves many factors, including the political clout of the region's congressional delegation and how good a case the governor makes, said University of Delaware political science professor Richard Sylves, who studies disaster declarations. Oklahoma is so experienced at this process that its governors and emergency managers know how to make it run smoothly, he said.

"Some people get disaster declarations simply because they've got an influential political delegation," Lindell said of the process in general.

The irony, said Kathleen Tierney, who heads the Natural Hazards Center at the University of Colorado, is that Oklahoma's current two senators have often opposed special disaster relief funding bills for other parts of the country, such as one earlier this year for the Northeast after Superstorm Sandy.

Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., has criticized the FEMA formula for declaring disasters, saying it rewards smaller states and punishes bigger ones for catastrophes of the same size.

During a hearing last month, Coburn told Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano: "Oklahoma had 22 FEMA grants last year. I'm thankful that the federal government is helping Oklahoma out, but in a lot of those, we weren't overwhelmed and we could have taken and dealt with it. And some states that may be in much worse budget shape than we are had twice as much but got no help from the federal government on like-minded events. "

Joseph Nimmich, FEMA associate administrator for disaster response, said Thursday that politics has absolutely nothing to do with Oklahoma's many disaster declarations: "It's purely a natural occurrence."

Kremlin orders Russian pollster to register itself as 'spy'

Russia's only independent polling agency, the Levada Center, may face closure after Russian prosecutors ordered it to register as a "foreign agent" ? a term that's synonymous with "spy" in Russian ? under a new law designed to clamp down on nongovernmental organizations that receive any amount of funding from abroad and engage in any form of activity that authorities deem political.

The prosecutor's warning, delivered to the Levada Center on Monday and reproduced on the agency's website, essentially declares that Levada's world-renowned public opinion research is not considered by Russian authorities to be scientific work but rather "political activity" that is "aimed at shaping public opinion on government policy."

Levada, a registered NGO, is the only one of three major Russian pollsters that is independent of state funding and management. It has often had a tense relationship with the Kremlin. But many experts expressed surprise Monday over the prosecutor's threat, if only because Levada's sociological research ? including regular tracking polls on Vladimir Putin's public popularity ? has always been highly regarded on all sides of the political spectrum and is constantly cited by officials, parliamentarians, and state-run media.

In a statement, Levada's director Lev Gudkov said the order to cease publishing its work until it registers as a "foreign agent" puts the agency in "an extremely difficult situation."

"The prosecutors office is hanging our organization on the hook of possible fines while at the same time undermining its credibility and business reputation. Basically, the extremely vague definitions of 'political activity' and 'foreign funding' being applied here allow for the most arbitrary and elastic interpretations.... Hence, we face the possibility of administrative action against the management of our agency and even possible liquidation," he said.

Dozens of Russian NGOs have already been ordered by prosecutors to wear the "foreign agent" label in all their public activities, or face crippling fines and, ultimately, police shutdown. None have yet complied with the order, which they say does nothing to improve financial transparency and is solely designed to destroy their credibility with the Russian public, official institutions, and other organizations by saddling them with a label that means "spy" and nothing else in Russian.

Among those that have been singled out by prosecutors are the grassroots election monitoring organization Golos, the corruption watchdog Transparency International, and human rights monitors such as Memorial.

All of the targeted groups insist that they do not engage in partisan political activities of any kind, but that prosecutors are deploying a definition of "political" that includes any activities that might irritate authorities.

"This is not an attack against us specially but it is part of a growing assault against all NGOs and active civil society," says Alexei Grazhdankin, Levada's deputy director.

"What authorities want to do with Levada is to regulate the way we do our sociological work and control our relations with clients.... We are not engaged in political activity because we do not interfere, we just track the changes in public opinion and record them. It's not clear to us how this law is being applied, or how the publication of our data can be interpreted as a means to influence public opinion," he says.

"When some of our polls about Putin or the government get published, they get angry at us. We do other polls about the protest movement and the opposition that get them upset. We're just doing our job, which is to try to shed light on what's happening in the country," he adds.

The prosecutor's warning letter alleges that Levada has received $777,000 over the past four years in funding from outside groups such as the MacArthur Foundation, the Ford Foundation, and George Soros? OSI Assistance Foundation.

The agency also earns money by doing sociological research and market surveys on behalf of foreign clients, Mr. Grazhdankin says.

In his statement, Mr. Gudkov insists that such funding has not amounted to more than 3 percent of Levada's budget in recent years.

"Unlike other polling organizations, we have no direct state financing or state grants for carrying out surveys that often entail significant financial and organizational expenses," writes Gudkov. "The funds we have received from foreign sources (including donations and grants won on a competitive basis) or payment for ordered surveys by foreign organizations (such as universities, mass-media, universities and consulting firms) makes up an insignificant part of the budget of Levada Center, basically between 1.5 percent and 3 percent in various years," he added.

All major NGOs have agreed among themselves to refuse prosecutors' orders to don the "foreign agent" label, which they argue is tantamount to swallowing a poison pill.

The authorities' next step, many analysts argue, will be to step up the pressure with huge fines until the biggest NGOs buckle, or send in police to close them down.

"In a sense we are returning to Soviet times, when all political information will be generated and doled out by the authorities," says Dmitry Oreshkin, head of the Mercator Group, an independent Moscow media consultancy.

"It's a convenient situation for the authorities, who can just write down the number of votes they need and it will be so reported. Economic indexes will grow constantly, and support for our beloved leader will be always buoyant. And it will go on that way until everything once again collapses," he says.

Improve Your Life With This Great Self Help Information - Amy Wine ...

You can better your life, both emotionally and mentally, through personal development. To reach your own self improvement goals, you need to be educated on what can and cannot work for you. Stress is what often brings down happiness. You are harming yourself mentally and physically when there is too much stress in your life. Letting go of stress can be the key to better thinking and meeting our goals with clear purpose and calm intent. Set a time each day to relax, to clear your mind, and be alone. Following this practice will improve your inner peace.

Find personal development books that are appropriate for your age and situation. Well written books on self improvement will always spark new ideas and give suggestions on altering your life. Find a book with excellent reviews because many are written poorly.

Be prepared to list your ideas wherever you are. Carry paper with you everywhere. Write down your idea in detail, then implement it at a later time when you can expand on the issue.

Identifying your personal values are the stepping stone to figuring out a self improvement plan that works for you. It is a waste of time to work on areas of your life that might contradict your values. When your efforts are focused on development that is aligned with your core values, your time and effort will be rewarded. If you do this, you can make lifelong positive changes, both personally and professionally.

Create a written pep talk for yourself. Make a list of all the good things about you, and put it on a postcard. Whenever you feel a lack of confidence, read it. You can also read it and record it on video, and watch it often. Why?

Make each day a better one than the last. Try to improve yourself constantly. Each day, make sure that you perform better than you ever have before.

It is impossible for you to properly care for the ones you love, unless you take care of yourself first. Regardless of where you are on your path, whether you are thriving or failing, take the time to rest and restore yourself.

Remember to treat people with respect regardless of how much power they have, or what they can do for you. Your treatment of others is a direct reflection of you character.

Try getting rid of your bad habits; it can be important to making your life better. Look at how you are living your life, and check if you are participating in any negative habits that should be eliminated.

When trying to battle depression, focus on diet and boost your complex carb intake. If you do not have an adequate amount of complex carbohydrates in your diet, your serotonin can become depleted. You can increase your intake of these carbs by eating plenty of fresh fruits, raw vegetables, nuts, brown rice, whole grains and beans.

If you suffer from anxiety, try going to see a movie with a friend. You will be thrust into a busy setting and out of your comfort zone, but you will not have to excessively socialize with others. It can also be an effective way for you to become more comfortable with being near a large group of people.

Conquer clutter and disorganization in all aspects of your life. Becoming more organized is a way to gain a sense of accomplishment and confidence. Better yet, you will no longer worry about finding necessary things or dealing with the stress that comes with living in a cluttered environment. Organizing your environment can be a calming and centralizing influence.

You can boost your self improvement by being selfless. There are times when you may have to sacrifice something and simply care for someone else. When you can balance sacrificing for others with meeting your own needs, you will gain the emotional versatility required to become a better person.

Your personal development goals will often include improving and incorporating new healthy habits into your life. Facing the challenges of improving your life is easier if you go into it with an open mind and a healthy body. You will feel stronger and have more control over your time and money since you won?t have as many medical expenses. Make it a goal to make healthy choices.

New salt study: We're still drowning in salt

New salt study: Despite warnings from the CDC, most producers of fast foods and processed foods didn't lower the salt content in their foods between 2005 and 2001, say researchers.

By Rachael Rettner,?My Health News Daily Senior Writer / May 14, 2013

Boston Market restaurants, like this one seen today in Alexandria, Va., have removed salt shakers from restaurant tables and placed them with other condiments on the beverage dispenser table. Most Americans still eat way too much salt, says a new study, not just from salt shakers but because of sodium in processed foods.

Despite recent calls for food manufacturers to cut back on salt in their products, sodium levels in processed and restaurant foods have changed little in recent years, a new salt study suggests.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

The study, conducted by the advocacy organization Center for Science in the Public Interest, reviewed the sodium content of 402 processed foods sold at supermarkets, and 78 fast foods sold at chain restaurants.

Between 2005 and 2011, the sodium content of processed foods declined, on average, by 3.5 percent, and the sodium content of fast foods increased by 2.6 percent. Both of these changes were so small that they could have been due to chance, said study researcher Dr. Stephen Havas, a professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

Currently, 9 in 10 Americans eat too much salt, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The government recommends people limit their salt intake to 2,300 milligrams per day. (For those who are 51 years or older, African-American, have high blood pressure, diabetes or chronic kidney diseases, the recommendation is 1,500 mg per day.)

"That?s nearly impossible for people to do right now, given how much salt is in restaurant and processed foods," Havas said. The average American takes in about 3,300 milligrams of sodium per day. Too much sodium in the diet raises blood pressure, which is a risk factor for heart disease and stroke, the CDC says.

Overall, the amount of salt we consume from processed and fast foods needs to decline by at least 50 percent to have benefits for people's health, Havas said. (Most of the salt we consume is through processed and fast foods, and not from a salt shaker, the researchers say.)

The new findings suggest that change happens too slowly when the food industry is asked to voluntarily reduce the sodium content of its foods, Havas said. Instead, the Food and Drug Administration should take steps to limit the amount of sodium allowed in different categories of food, he said.

High sodium foods

Some of the saltiest foods in the study were smoked bacon (1,803 mg of sodium per 100-gram serving), Caesar salad dressing (1,079 mg) and hot dogs (927 mg).

And a fast food meal of chicken strips and fries contained, on average, 1,239 mg of salt in 2011.

The study did not include products labeled as low sodium or sodium-free because the intent of the study was to focus on regular foods that had ample opportunity to reduce sodium levels between 2005 and 2011.

The researchers found wide variation in sodium levels in fast food. For instance, a medium serving of Burger King french fries had nearly twice the sodium as a medium serving of McDonald's french fries (670 mg versus 270 mg per 100 g serving).

iOS 6 reports for U.S. defense duty with new approval

iOS 6 reports for U.S. defense duty with new approval

The U.S. Department of Defense has approved the use of iOS 6 devices, which may help Apple to build some strength in a market still dominated by BlackBerry devices. The US D.O.D. currently has about 470,000 BlackBerrys in use across its networks, with 41,000 Apple mobile devices and 8,700 Android devices.

The Department of Defense is building a multivendor environment, it said in a press release, with BlackBerry and Samsung Knox devices also receiving similar approval.

The D.O.D. has cracked the door open to Apple and Android users, but it's not a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) environment: The organization doesn't support personal phones to connect to the network.

BlackBerry's security proofing of their systems is legendary, but is that enough, paired with recent products like the Q10, to keep them on the government payroll? Or is Apple (or Samsung) likely to take over, as they have elsewhere? Let us know in the comments.

Eminem wasn't stabbed -- claim was hoax

Celebs

Eminem is just fine, his representatives say.

The text of the Facebook message was grim: "Rapper Eminem left nearly DEAD after being stabbed 4 times in NYC!" But the claim was untrue, and the attached photo of a tattooed man's back with deep slash marks was not a picture of the rapper.

"These happen all the time. He's fine," a representative of the rapper told SPIN.

But the creepy claim gained some traction among music fans anyway, as many who saw it on Facebook and Twitter shared it without verifying the facts.

Those who click on the link, supposedly to see a video of the attack (!), are forced to share the link with their Facebook friends. "After sharing the post, the link redirects to a survey website promising ?free prizes? along with more Eminem stabbing news, which, of course, never comes," the International Business Times reports.

As the International Business Times notes, the same photo of a man's slashed back was used in a similar scam in 2011 to claim that Justin Bieber was stabbed -- he was not.

A new Eminem album is due out soon, and rumors are that it may include an appearance by comic Chris Rock.
